FACT-CHECKING THE WAPO "FACT-CHECKERS"
A WASHINGTON POST “Fact-Checker” column (quotation marks deliberate), not by Glenn Kessler but by Elyse Samuels and Meg Kelly, gives “Four Pinocchios,” the worst rating for lying, to President Trump for allegedly promoting hydroxychloroquine as a “cure” for the COVID-19 (Chinese –- that's a fact) coronavirus.
Where to begin? Aside from the headline, which makes sure to include the words “false hope” (they don’t know that), I suppose we could start right up front, with the quotes in which Trump allegedly tells his overwhelming LIES about it being a cure. Huge whoppers such as, “I don’t know, it’s looking like it’s having some good results. That would be a phenomenal thing.” And “It’s this powerful drug on malaria. And there are signs that it works on this. Some very strong signs.” And of course, “What do you have to lose?” Well, there’s a hardcore sales pitch!
Likewise, the writers’ case for dismissing hydroxychloroquine (which is being used in combination with other drugs, not alone) is that there aren't yet any clinical trials proving efficacy. But here's a FACT: those take time, and people who might die in the next 24 hours don’t want to wait for results to come in months from now., especially with the many “anecdotal” accounts of the drug’s success. That’s why Trump said, “What do you have to lose?”
There have been some small-scale trials showing promise, such as those by French doctor Didier Raoult. But the authors wave his work off as “discredited.” But how? I followed the link in the story to the journal that allegedly “discredited” the study. Here is the entirety of what it said on that subject:
“The ISAC (International Society of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy) Board believes the article does not meet the Society’s expected standard, especially relating to the lack of better explanations of the inclusion criteria and the triage of patients to ensure patient safety.”
Does that mean the drug wasn’t shown to be effective?
Here’s a welcome update in the war on churches that some officials are waging, using the coronavirus lockdown as an excuse. The Greenville, Mississippi, mayor who had the cops give $500 tickets to people for attending a drive-in church service safely inside their cars may rue the day he tried to make a federal case of expressing religious beliefs. That’s because the Department of Justice is ready to make it a real federal case, and they’re on the side of the churchgoers.
LIBERALS REAP WHAT THEY SOW
With liberals in some states and cities using the coronavirus pandemic as an excuse to let criminals out of jail, many people are buying guns to protect their homes and families. And in a supreme example of irony, residents of these deep blue areas are furious to discover how hard it actually is to buy a gun.
There are similar stories coming from around the nation, but that link is to an interview with the owner of a target range and gun shop in Orange County, California. He says that customers are becoming enraged, cursing and stomping out when he tells them all the obstacles they have to overcome to buy a gun. They demand to know why they have to wait 10 days to take home their own property to protect their families, and he tells them that nobody at the gun shop voted for that law, or all the many other anti-gun laws.
It seems obvious that these people have made the cardinal mistake of most liberals these days: believing their own propaganda. Just like people who are enraged over the racist dictator/Putin puppet cartoon version of Donald Trump that they invented out of their own fevered imaginations, they actually believed that you could walk into any gun store and walk out with an armload of machine guns (which have been banned for private owners since the 1930s, incidentally.) Welcome to reality!
By the way, this is nothing new. The late Charlton Heston, actor and NRA President, loved to tell about the time riots broke out in Los Angeles, and his wealthy liberal neighbors who backed every new gun control law and scolded him for being a gun owner called and begged to borrow a gun to protect their homes. He said he told them, “I’m sorry, I’d love to give you a gun, but there’s a 10-day waiting period. Remember, you insisted on it?” Of course, this is why most celebrities have security guards: to provide them with the armed protection that they think you and your family don’t deserve.
Here is the link to Tuesday’s unredacted and uninterrupted White House press briefing on the COVID-19 (Chinese) coronavirus:
The biggest news out of the briefing was President Trump’s announcement that he was immediately halting all funding to the World Health Organization while the US undertakes a 60-to-90-day investigation into why the “China-centric” WHO caused so much death by severely mismanaging and covering up the virus’ spread, including opposing his ban on travel from China. The US is the world’s biggest donor to the WHO, giving $400 to $500 million a year, over ten times what China contributes. Trump said the money will go instead to the areas “that most need it.”
Here is an excellent article by Gordon Chang on why the WHO deserves defunding.
Finally, with thanks to Instapundit, here is the best tweet on this subject.
Trump also said the “scariest day” of his life was when he was told the US didn’t have enough ventilators to meet the projected need, and he moved Heaven and Earth ensure we got them. He also said he would be "authorizing governors to reopen their states, to reopen as they see fit," but stressed that he would not put "any pressure" on Governors to reopen (what a dictator!) And Trump discussed the progress of plans to reopen the economy and said that he’s tired of watching 14-year-old ball games. I’d suggest that he try watching 80-year-old movies, they’re actually better than new ones.
