Nancy Pelosi likened the Republican tax bill to “Armageddon” not long back. Of course, Democrats treat every Republican proposal as if it were exactly that, but this time she really means it! So if you are one of the few people who still take Nancy Pelosi seriously, you surely expected to see lots of fire and brimstone and the Four Horsemen and assorted other drama to mark its passage. Well, the House has passed it, and things are pretty quiet so far.
Maybe Armageddon is on hold until the Senate passes it later this evening, which they are expected to do. There’s always a chance that the Senate will opt out of its role in bringing on the end of the world. But it looks as though it will pass the Senate by a razor-thin margin, and those Americans who have been made wary by Democrats using words like “evil” to describe it for months should defer “Judgment Day” until they’ve had a chance to see the results.
What this bill is designed to do is to bring corporate tax rates into the area of sanity, more in line with the rest of the world; stimulate strong economic growth; and also to give the middle class –- especially small business owners –- a break. Democrats are always talking about their own goals for helping the middle class, and whenever they do, I know the middle class is in for a major clubbing.
The “Affordable” Care Act, for example, was supposed to help the middle class but offered truly unaffordable premiums and sky-high deductibles. The rich could afford this, of course, and the poor could get subsidies, but middle-income families could...well, go pound sand. This tax reform bill finally eliminates the Obamacare mandate. That alone would be huge.
