The two brothers who allegedly colluded with actor Jussie Smollett in allegedly staging an alleged fake hate crime have issued their first public statement. It’s getting harder for Smollett’s lawyers to keep expressing outrage that their poor innocent client is being falsely accused. Allegedly.
There’s been a lot of commentary about the closed door meeting of House Democrats where 26 moderates who voted with Republicans on a couple of issues were ordered by Nancy Pelosi never to do it again. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez even claimed, in fine Stalinist fashion, that she was keeping “a list” of these enemies of the Party and would make sure they faced leftist primary challengers if they didn’t knuckle under and vote against their consciences (and the will of their constituents who elected them on their promise that they would be bipartisan moderates.)
Some of the commentary centers on whether this represents the implosion and demise of the Democratic Party, with the out-of-control socialists staging the equivalent of a purge against the few remaining centrists. If so, I hate to see it go. I think a healthy two-party system is a good thing, as long as both parties are reasonable and put America’s interests ahead of growing their Party’s power. I don’t want a one-party system, and if the Democratic Party does go full-bore socialist, I don’t want to see America destroyed by a lot of miseducated young people actually voting for free stuff and learning a harsh lesson about economic reality, a la Venezuela.
So I’m going to make a suggest that I haven’t heard anyone else make yet. Listen up, you 26 Democratic moderates who are being bossed around by a power-mad brat, like the kid in the “Twilight Zone” episode who threatened to send anyone who displeased him to the corn field. You can end this right now, and I’ll tell you how in two simple words:
If you all switch to the GOP, this nightmare will end immediately. The House will instantly go from Democrat by 235-197 to Republican by 223-209. Adults will once again be back in charge of the gavel and the committees, necessary business will get done, and AOC and her fellow freshman socialist, racist and anti-Semitic agitators will be relegated to the kiddie table where they belong. They can try challenging you with more leftist firebreathers in 2020, but by then, you’ll have a two-year record of bipartisan accomplishments to run on. Besides, your voters elected you because you were moderates, remember?
Go ahead, dare to cross over from the Dark Side. A grateful America will thank you for it.
From the “Some People Never Learn” Desk: Michael Cohen is going to prison to lying to Congress. But before he enters the Graybar Hotel, he decided to stop by Congress and testify again. Now, he could be facing additional charges for lying to Congress in his second appearance before Congress to deny that he was lying to Congress this time.
And here’s more evidence that he was lying to Congress, straight from the horse’s…mouth.
Seriously, if you want to stand up in Congress and lie to America every time you open your mouth, do it the proper way: get elected first.
Having already embraced socialism and infanticide, some Democrats are focusing on yet another winning issue by calling for legalizing prostitution. Or as they prefer to call it, “sex work.” As New York State Senator Julia Salazar puts it, “Sex work is work, and we need to start treating it as such.”
This could be a case where the Democratic Party’s almost-daily shifting of moral standards could trip them up. The hedonistic, “hands off my body/do your own thing/sex is personal and private” Democrats will defend legalizing prostitution at the same moment some prominent billionaires (who are already targeted for extinction by the Party’s young socialist firebrands) are getting arrested for patronizing massage parlors on grounds that they are exploiting women who may be forced to work there through human trafficking.
I imagine they’ll try to split the difference by arguing that if it were legal, it could be regulated to insure that people working in it were doing it voluntarily. In fact, this could inadvertently be a good plan: Democrats have used regulations and taxes to destroy any number of legal businesses, from manufacturing to coal mining. Maybe legalizing “sex work” and then putting Democrats in charge of regulating and taxing it the same way they do all other “work” will finally eradicate it. If anything can actually destroy the world’s oldest profession, it’s liberal economic policies.
I hate to intrude on all the very important Michael Cohen news on the 24-hour news channels, but there’s another minor story they might want to give a bit of attention to: a nuclear war might be about to break out.
The Supreme Court heard arguments by a group of atheists seeking to force the removal of a large cross-shaped monument in Prince George’s County, Maryland, that was erected after World War I to honor the war dead. They claim that this violates the separation of church and state. Thankfully, most of the Justices did not seem inclined to separate common sense from the law and order that a 93-year-old piece of history memorializing fallen war heroes be knocked down to placate the plaintiffs.
A decision will come at the end of June. Let’s hope it will not require that this and similar memorials to the war dead be removed all over America simply because a handful of atheists with way too much free time on their hands don’t like the shape of them, want to eradicate all vestiges of religion from US history and the public square, and think that associating a cross with the dead means the government is forcing every American to become a Christian. Next, they’ll be claiming that the Pentagon is forcing citizens to become Pentecostals.
I wish the Court would not only rule against these whiners but also order them to attend a showing of the new World War I documentary, “They Shall Not Grow Old.” Maybe that would give them some perspective on history, sacrifice and how microscopic their alleged problem is compared to what the soldiers of World War I had to face.
I’ve repeatedly warned voters before elections that the problem with voting for a Democrat who claims to be moderate and promises to work across the aisle is that a vote for any Democrat is a vote for the ultra-liberal Party leadership. That means that even if you vote for a Democrat whose policy positions are in line with President Trump’s, that extra check in the “D” column is one more step toward keeping Pelosi and Schumer in the driver’s seats. And with them in charge (not to mention all the horrifying committee leadership positions), there will be no moderate bipartisan compromise.
As if to prove my point, Pelosi made it very clear this week in a closed-door meeting that moderate Democrats had better stop voting with Republicans. They’re facing strong-arm tactics from their leadership if they don’t toe the party line and stop voting their consciences (in a leftwing variation on the McCarthy era, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez also reportedly threatened to put them on a “list” of turncoats to be targeted in primaries by leftist challengers.)
This all centers on an arcane procedural maneuver explained at the link, but in a nutshell, a couple of dozen Democrats embarrassed their Party by voting with Republicans to add amendments to Democratic bills, one that condemned Anti-Semitism and another that required ICE to be notified when an illegal immigrant tried to buy a gun. I’m so old, I remember when most Democrats actually agreed with both of those things and voting in favor of them wouldn’t get you threatened with expulsion from the Party.
Let us hope that in just these past two months, the newly-empowered Democratic House has made it abundantly clear to voters that if they want such radical ideas as border security, opposition to Anti-Semitism and putting the good of America ahead of partisan politics, they'd better vote Republican because there’s no place for that kind of thing in today’s Democratic Party.
When you can’t meet standards in some endeavor, there are two options: demand more effort or lower the standards. Some North Carolina Democratic legislators want to take academic standards to the basement with a bill that would lower the school grade for an “F” from 60% to 39%.
Pretending that students are succeeding academically by getting four out of ten answers right does no favors for students or for competent teachers who are trying to uphold higher standards for education. For instance, can you imagine someone believing they’re an expert in economics because they have a degree in it when 60% of what they think they know about the subject is wrong? Wait, come to think of it, I can imagine someone like that. And we sure don’t need more of them!
