Judging by all the toupee-ablaze OUTRAGE at President Trump over his Administration’s handling of illegal immigrants, including the ever-popular comparisons to Hitler and slave owners, you’d think the vast majority of Americans want open borders and no enforcement of immigration laws.
But the Economist and YouGov.com surveyed Americans and found that the majority's views on illegal immigration are much closer to Trump's than to your typical MSNBC commentator's. Two-thirds agree that illegal entrants should be detained while fewer than 20% support the Obama policy of releasing them in the US on a promise to show up later for a hearing. A majority think crossing the border illegally should be treated as a criminal, not civil, matter. And while only 20% approve of detention that separates families, 44% think families should be held in detention together. Again, only 19% support letting them go on a promise to return later. Finally, only 8% think that illegal immigration isn’t a serious problem.
Now, let’s survey Americans to see how many think using social media to rile up unstable people to murder ICE agents and kidnap, rape and murder the children of your political opponents is a serious problem that should be treated as a criminal matter (since that still seems to be going on). I’d be willing to bet its more than 8 percent. Say, you think maybe the mainstream media and Hollywood are out of touch with America?
