This is not a rerun: A teenage male whom authorities knew to be a potential threat has attacked a group of people in Florida. But it’s not getting as much media attention as you might expect, maybe because it doesn’t fit the current preferred media narrative. It didn’t involve a gun, but it did involve radical Islamist terrorism and failure by the authorities to do their jobs.
In Palm Gardens, Florida, 17-year-old Corey Johnson was arrested for allegedly stabbing a 13-year-old boy to death and seriously wounding a woman and her 13-year-old son at a birthday party sleepover. Johnson reportedly told police that he was an ISIS sympathizer, his Islamic faith inspired the attack, and he read the Quran beforehand “to give him courage to carry out his intentions.”
Once again, there were more red flags than a Chinese military parade. The local police and school district police and the FBI were aware of his sick bent as far back as middle school. They were told he had violent tendencies, was a white supremacist, made anti-Semitic and anti-gay statements and talked about places to bomb. His own mother and grandparents alerted the police that he was enthralled with dictators such as Hitler, Stalin and Kim Jong Un, and that he’d become interested in Islam and reading the Quran. But he was a juvenile, so they took a “redirection” approach and didn’t pursue it.
Johnson next allegedly made a violent online threat against a Catholic high school in England that prompted an evacuation. He reportedly starting watching ISIS beheading videos and expressed interest in joining them. The FBI began monitoring his computer and demanded he cease all ISIS and terrorist-related social media postings. He didn’t.
Finally, last month, the FBI decided it had enough evidence to charge him. A month later, on March 5th, police asked where they were with that. The FBI replied that “probable cause affidavits would be coming in the next several weeks.”
A week later, while still walking around free as a bird, he stabbed three people with a knife.
Please explain to me again: how is passing more gun control laws to be enforced by local, state and federal authorities going to keep mentally-disturbed teenagers from killing people?
