While the 4th of July week was a great week for America, it was a sad week for humor. It was announced that after nearly 70 years, MAD magazine will no longer publish new issues (but Pete Buttigieg just found out who Alfred E. Neuman was!) It’s hard to sell any magazine these days, but especially hard for MAD, for a number of reasons: the Internet has made people expect humor to be super-timely, not bi-monthly – and Twitter, Facebook and YouTube are filled with free topical one-liners and parodies. There was also a lot of behind-the-scenes turmoil with DC Comics buying the magazine, firing the longtime staff and moving it from NYC to Los Angeles.
And here’s another reason nobody else is mentioning, from our writer Pat Reeder, who grew up on MAD and actually tried to read it more recently:
“I was disappointed to see that it had gone ‘woke,’ with a lot of the articles based on the same tired leftist premises as every other ‘humor’ outlet these days: Trump is a dumb dictator, global warming is rapidly destroying the planet, Republicans are racists, etc. etc. The old MAD poked fun at all sacred cows and institutions, but the new MAD had gotten the ‘progressive’ religion and only attacked heretics. The left has taken over much of the culture and become the intolerant establishment, making them ripe for satire. MAD actually would have much funnier if it had dared to mock the new leftist establishment, too. But these days, they were dealing with a young demographic that seemingly has no sense of humor, plus the threat of violence from extremist thugs if you make fun of the 'wrong' thing. Ask the staff of Charlie Hebdo about that, those who survived.”
MAD is too valuable and well-known (Pete Buttigieg aside) as a brand to stay away forever, so I suspect it will be revived before long. To me, the far sadder news on the humor front was the announcement that “Mini-AOC,” the eight-year-old girl who did the hilarious parodies of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, will no longer do them and her parents have taken down all her channels. Can you guess why?
That’s right: big, brave “social justice warriors” sent doxing and DEATH threats to an EIGHT-YEAR-OLD GIRL for committing the horrendous crime of poking fun at their favorite politician!
This infuriates me more than any other story in the news. I hope that someone in the media asks AOC to comment on this and that she has the decency to condemn her own “defenders” in no uncertain terms. I don’t particularly like it when people mock and insult me (and I guarantee you that none of them do it with even a fraction of the wit of that little girl), but I would never threaten them or demand they be silenced.
I also hope that federal authorities will use every tool at their disposal to hunt down, publicly identify, arrest and prosecute to the full extent of the law every last person who threatened that little girl and her family and frightened her into giving up her right to free speech and to exercise her God-given talent. What a lesson to teach a child about the way America works!
Those people who threatened her are scum, and whether you are on the right, the left or anywhere between, anyone with any human decency at all should demand that they be scrubbed out of society.
