Just a couple of days ago, I linked to a story about California Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s former chief intelligence staffer Daniel Jones’ hiring of political dirt-digging operation Fusion GPS and highly imaginative fiction writer Christopher Steele. His purpose: to continue providing “information” about Trump/Russia collusion to the press and “policymakers on Capitol Hill” –- AFTER President Trump’s election. But this story smells so bad, it’s time to put on the nose clips and do a more in-depth examination of how rotten it is.
According to a declassified House Intelligence Committee report, “seven to ten” wealthy donors from California and New York were funding this effort, with the purpose of furthering the made-up narrative that the Trump campaign had been working with Russia. The report confirms a story from February by Sean Davis at The Federalist that revealed Jones was directing a scheme to continue trying to discredit Trump after the election. We can glean a lot from this story, including the reassuring fact that there are still a few actual journalists around.
This looks baaaaaaad. But guess what? It’s much worse. Feinstein, Jones’ former boss, is ranking Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, which has been investigating Fusion GPS, and, unbelievably, she never disclosed her association with Jones. (I’ll let that sink in for a moment. Ready to continue?) Now recall that Feinstein had already committed a deliberate breach of committee policy by releasing –- all by her lonesome –- a transcript of the testimony by Fusion GPS founder Glenn Simpson. So maybe it shouldn’t surprise anyone that she’s on the hot seat again for failing to disclose a spectacular conflict of interest involving Fusion GPS.
Now, tighten the nose clips, because it’s about to get smellier. Why stop with one investigative committee? There’s more to Davis’ report that implicates at least one Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee as well. As it happens, Jones was also in communication with Sen. Mark Warner, ranking Democrat on that committee, in his effort to try to lend credibility to the infamous Trump/Russia dossier.
It gets even worse; in fact, here’s where it’s just impossible to hold your nose tightly enough to keep from being overcome with fumes. According to text messages obtained by the Daily Caller, Jones contacted a man named Adam Waldman, a registered foreign agent for Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, who was, in turn, in touch with Sen. Warner. Jones reached out to Waldman on March 15, 2017, telling him that he was with a new nonprofit group called the Democratic Integrity Project (I’ll wait while you fall on the floor laughing helplessly), and that “Chris” wanted them to connect. The two got together the next day. Later that day, Jones texted Waldman that “Chris Steele asked me to call you.”
Jones sent Waldman examples of anti-Trump stories on various topics that his group had helped plant in media outlets such as Reuters.
The Senate Intelligence Committee heard testimony from Waldman back on November 3 of last year, in which he disclosed that Jones had told him he had been working with Fusion GPS and that “a group of Silicon Valley billionaires and George Soros” were funding the project.
According to the House report, Jones told the FBI way back in March, 2017, about his group --- actual name: Penn Quarter Group --- and described his activities to “continue exposing Russian interference,” revealing he’d been provided approximately $50 million by wealthy donors located primarily on the East and West coasts. The FBI has obviously known about them all this time.
So, let’s see. Before the 2016 election, the “dossier” was secretly funded, through channels, by Hillary Clinton and the DNC. There has never been one bit of evidence to support the salacious accusations in it. Trump was elected despite their efforts, sending Democrats into a desperate frenzy that led them to continue trying to discredit him any way they could. One of their chosen methods: build on the fake “Russian collusion” narrative by continuing the work with Fusion GPS and Chris Steele --- and by involving people actually associated with powerful Russians. And the FBI has been aware of Jones’ work and his sources of funding for over a year.
By now it’s clear who was really colluding with Russians. Not Donald Trump. It was the Democrats working to bring him down, with the apparent knowledge and consent of highly-placed investigative committee members. As we’ve said for a long time, if you want to know what the Democrats are up to, just look at what they’re accusing others of doing. Remember that the next time you see Rep. Adam Schiff or Sen. Warner rushing to the TV cameras. Where’s a good pie-thrower when you need one?
