For all those praising the NFL kneelers for their “courage” in going along with the pack and kneeling during the National Anthem, resisting the pressure and doing the right thing takes real courage, and one player stood tall above them all. But it isn’t surprising, because this Huck’s Hero has proven his courage many times before, on fields far more dangerous than a playing field. Alejandro Villanueva is a West Point graduate and former Army Ranger who won the Bronze Star for Valor during three tours in Afghanistan. He just could not bring himself to show disrespect for the flag and the National Anthem.
Pittsurgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin was reportedly upset with Villanueva for not joining the team in staying in the locker room and boycotting the anthem. Tomlin said, “I was looking for 100 percent participation, we were gonna be respectful of our football team.” Mr. Tomlin should take a lesson from his #78 in what is most deserving of respect.
