Here’s a sentence I am absolutely thrilled to be able to write: Rep. Steve Scalise returned to the floor of the U.S. House yesterday.
Rep. Scalise spent about a month in the hospital and additional long months of physical rehabilitation (which will continue) recovering from extremely serious internal damage caused by a gunman’s bullet during...baseball practice with his Republican teammates. If he hadn’t been accompanied by the security detail afforded him as House Majority Whip, much more carnage might have occurred on that June day.
It was an emotional homecoming for the Louisiana congressman, as everyone in the chamber rose to cheer him. (Thankfully, nobody “took a knee” for this!) There were tearful hugs for a colleague who won the fight to live as surgeons worked to, as Scalise has phrased it, put him back together again like Humpty Dumpty. The prayers of many were answered today.
