Today's Commentary --- Mr. President, please make this your priority for the next two years -- Snipes -- Avenatti -- Responsible journalism -- The Baltic Experience 2019 -- Caravan update -- Lewinsky update -- Evening Edition - Daily Verse

With Democrats taking control of the House (and presumably doing little more than investigating the President, his family and business associates) and Republicans keeping control of the Senate and White House, it’s unlikely that much is going to get done legislatively for a while, at least until January of 2021.  So, how can Republicans make the most productive use of the next two years, to really make a difference?  Andrew C. McCarthy has a new, very helpful column that offers some direction.

President Trump was voted into office, he notes, in large part because the electorate wanted to see his policies implemented --- policies on immigration, the environment, etc.  In our free, constitutional republic, that’s the way it’s supposed to work, with elections being a choice from among competing policies.  But that’s not what is happening now, as hard as Trump has been working to fulfill his promises, because of activist judges (the “Lawyer Left,” as McCarthy calls it) who were largely put in place under Obama.  With President Trump being blocked by them from exercising his constitutional authority on a variety of fronts, McCarthy recommends a solution:  “conveyor belt” confirmation of his nominees to federal appellate courts and district courts.

After even as moderate a Republican as Jeb Bush called for Broward County, Florida, Supervisor of Elections Brenda Snipes to be removed from her job, Snipes said it’s now “time to move on.”  Having overseen balloting that’s thrown the entire election into chaos, sparked protests, raised suspicions of fraud and cast a shadow over the legitimacy of the process, Snipes said, “I think I have served the purpose that I came here for, which was to provide a credible election product for our members.”

I’ve used this analogy before, but I can’t help thinking of Stan Laurel, asked to help his friend Oliver Hardy clean his house and now holding a garden hose on the smoldering ashes that are all that remain of it, declaring, “Well…I guess there’s nothing else I can do.”

Ollie replied, “No, I guess not.”  In Brenda Snipes’ case, I fervently pray there’s not.

Sleazy lawyer and ideal 2020 Democratic Presidential candidate Michael Avenatti was reportedly arrested in Los Angeles Wednesday after a woman filed a felony domestic violence report against him.  Sources told that the woman’s face was “swollen and bruised.”  Avenatti was released after posting $50,000 bond and told reporters he would be “fully exonerated.”

Sources told TMZ that the alleged confrontation happened at an exclusive apartment building in west L.A. when the woman returned to collect her things after Avenetti ejected her.  The woman reportedly ran out of the building, security brought her back in, then Avenetti ran in chasing her, screaming, “She hit me first,” and angrily adding, “This is (BLEEP), this is f---ing (BLEEP).”  Well, that does sound like him.

It is interesting that when the accusation is against him, he doesn’t insist that we believe the woman, nor argue that an angry response from the accused is proof of guilt.  Two courtesies he’s never extended to President Trump or Judge Kavanaugh.  But I’ll do something now that I’m sure he would never do if the accusation were against someone he found politically distasteful or personally repugnant.  I will remind everyone that he has only been accused, not convicted, and he is entitled to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.

That’s known as “due process rights.”  They’ve been under assault for a while by liberals like Michael Avenatti.  But I have a feeling that he just became a sudden convert to the importance of their preservation.

Responsible journalism

By Mike Huckabee

Hysterical “Average Americans are Nazis” Fake News: Remember the idiotic “controversy” about a young aide to Brett Kavanaugh supposedly making a Nazi hand gesture in a photo snapped at his Senate hearing? The same kind of Internet-fanned “OUTRAGE!!!” flared up after a “journalist” for the website tweeted a photo of the male 2018 class of Wisconsin’s Baraboo High School and wrote that if anyone “can clue me in on why it appears the entire male class of 2018 is throwing up a Sig (sic) Heil during their prom photos - that would be great.”

Put aside the impossibility of “cluing in” anyone so clueless.  The reaction was predictable: liberal media voices echoing the “Trump has normalized Nazism” nonsense, and social justice “warriors” trying to ruin the lives of innocent kids over 1/250th of a second of their lives that they didn’t bother to investigate before hurling the worst possible allegation you can make.  Responsible journalists soon found out what the photo actually was.  The photographer had asked them all to raise their right arms in a “victory” gesture, like the famous last scene of “The Breakfast Club” – which I’m sure most of these kids had never seen, so they did what they thought the photographer wanted them to do.  Those Nazis!!!

Blogger Ann Althouse has a rundown of this typically shameful example of modern, politically-corrupted “journalism,” along with a great photo that should have liberal media outlets demanding to know why there are so many Nazis in the White House Press Corps.

Caravan update

By Mike Huckabee

The debate over CNN “reporter” Jim Acosta losing his White House press pass for being an obnoxious tool who can’t control his mouth or hands has gone so far down the road to Crazytown that it’s easy to forget what started it.  It all began with him trying to lecture President Trump about how wrong he was to refer to the caravan of migrants headed our way as “invaders.”  Acosta claimed a campaign ad showing actual migrants climbing over a border wall was misleading and “demonized” migrants, who aren’t “invading” the US (any more than the black-masked thugs who vandalized Tucker Carlson's house and terrorized his wife were a "mob.")

Well, the ink isn’t even dry yet on CNN’s ridiculous lawsuit, and already, the first wave of the caravan has made it to Tijuana.  Can you guess what they already tried to do?  If you said, “Invade American by climbing over a border wall,” then you are far too clear-headed to work for CNN.

Lewinsky update

By Mike Huckabee

It’s hard to imagine there’s anything about former President Bill Clinton’s “relationship” with then-White House intern Monica Lewinsky that we didn’t know (and what we do know, we wish we didn’t.)  But in interviews for an upcoming A&E series, Ms Lewinsky revealed that her tryst with Clinton was not the just-between-them indiscretion that was portrayed. She claims Clinton’s trusted staff members not only knew what was going on, they manipulated her to facilitate Clinton’s sexual predations and helped cover up for him.

This is hardly shocking, since even Time magazine wrote back in 1998, “If it takes a village to raise a child, maybe it takes a circle of complicit friends to help a grown man go on acting like a teenager.”  But what’s new is that Ms Lewinsky is finally naming names of White House staffers, and you might remember this name.

Hello mike. I hope you and your family have a beautiful thanksgiving. Enjoy your column and Sarah. I was just wondering how the California precincts can count votes that came in after the election is over and turned all the republicans that were winning into losing candidates. It sounds like fraud and California should be investigated. Thank you.

I don't know about you, Governor, but after the mid-terms (most of them) were over, I heard a collective sigh of relief from voters weary of the strife and contention that we were subjected to daily. I know that as long as there are politicians, there will be battles. But, honestly, I am ready for a World War 2 chorus of "Silent Night", started by a few White House aides walking slowly down the aisles of the Senate and the House, and no one gets to continue business until all stop, put down their weapons, and join in, if only for one hour. What do you think? A happy Thanksgiving to you and your family, and all the happy folk who put together your great show.
