Okay, I’m waiting for the first Democrat to throw a stone over this: a third White House official, George David Banks (special assistant to the president for international energy and environmental policy at the National Economic Council), has resigned after he was rejected for a full security clearance. The reason: he admitted to smoking marijuana in 2013.

Yes, you read that correctly. In a nation where entire states are legalizing recreational pot, which the last Administration turned a blind eye to…In a capital where the last two Democratic Presidents admitted to smoking pot in their youths themselves, and the last Republican, George W. Bush, evaded the question by saying, “When I was young and irresponsible, I was young and irresponsible”…admitting to smoking pot once four years ago can still keep you from getting a security clearance.

I don’t want to diminish what a bad idea it is to use drugs, and I’m happy we now have a President who has always avoided drugs and alcohol. But I can’t help wondering, how many people involved in investigating Banks for a security clearance couldn’t pass that standard themselves? Indeed, how did the Obama Administration ever get fully staffed, since I have a hard time accepting that those people seriously believed in those policies if they never tried mind-altering drugs.

Maybe Banks’ real problem wasn’t that he smoked pot once four years ago. Maybe it was that he was honest and admitted it. From what I’ve seen of Washington, violating drug laws is no big deal, but being that honest is a career-killer.
