Today's Commentary ---  President Trump fulfills promise, declassifies all "Russia"  --- May announces resignation -- Bad news for Jussie Smolett --- Leftists never give up -- Agreeing with AOC --- Socialism is not the cure --- Friday humor -- Fingerprints -- Evening Edition -- Daily Verse

In MAJOR BREAKING NEWS: Thursday evening, President Trump issued an executive order giving U.S. Attorney General William Barr the “full and complete authority” to DECLASSIFY material related to his investigation into the origins of the “Russia” probe.

We’re talking about every aspect of the Mueller investigation, including that elusive memo about the “scope” of the special counsel, all the documents relating to the FISA applications for spying, all the memos and transcripts relating to the surveillance of Trump campaign associates such as George Papadopoulos (including exculpatory evidence that may have been withheld from judicial proceedings), and more.

This should be great news to anyone who wants to know what really happened, but to give you an idea of how the mainstream media will be covering this, here’s a sample sentence from Thursday’s AP story: “The directive marked an escalation of Trump’s efforts to ‘investigate the investigators,’ as he continues to try to undermine the findings of special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe and mounting Democratic calls for impeachment proceedings.”

May announces resignation

By Mike Huckabee

Embattled British Prime Minister Theresa May announced her resignation this morning, after months of failing to come up with a passable bill to extricate Britain from the European Union.

This comes a day after an election in which polls show her once-dominant conservative Tory party will end up in fifth place with just 7% of the vote, while the newly formed Brexit Party will come in first with 37%.

I know many readers have little interest in elections in other countries, but this is interesting because it’s part of a broader trend.  If you listen to the media and political elites all around the world, you’d think that leftism has won the day and everyone now embraces its tenets, from socialism to all the “woke” social justice causes.  And yet, from America to Australia to Great Britain and points beyond, when the people get a chance to express their opinions, they reject big government and arrogant elitist regulators trying to run their lives.

The dirty secret that none of the elites wants to admit or wants us to know is that populism is actually popular.

Bad news for Jussie Smolett

By Mike Huckabee

Bad news for actor Jussie Smolett: a judge ruled Thursday that the records of his case for making a false charge of a hate crime will be unsealed and made available to the public.  The shock of the prosecutor dropping all the charges was aggravated by the sealing of the records of the case, to insure that whatever happened and whatever the police discovered would be hidden from the public.

Ironically, it was Smollett’s own arrogance that tripped him up. Instead of being humbly grateful for getting let off the hook and leaving quietly, he immediately took to the TV cameras to proclaim his innocence and blast his critics.  So when his attorneys argued that releasing the records would violate his privacy, the judge ruled that he didn’t act like someone who was concerned about protecting his privacy and who just wanted to be left alone.

Still, it’s questionable how much we’ll learn about the case that we didn’t already know or figure out.  The unsealed records may show us in more detail what the cops uncovered to make them so sure Smollett was lying.  But what I’m most interested in knowing won’t be in that file, unless it also contains transcripts of all the DA’s private phone calls.

Oh, and speaking of that, guess who thinks it’s okay to refuse to comply with a subpoena?  I eagerly await the lectures about how horrifying and wrong that is from Jerry Nadler and Nancy Pelosi...

Leftists never give up

By Mike Huckabee

One thing you have to give to leftists: they never, never, never, ever give up.  You probably thought that with Obama’s departure, the Little Sisters of the Poor order of nuns would finally be safe from bureaucrats forcing them into court to try to violate their First Amendment rights by making them pay for contraceptives and abortion drugs under Obamacare.  But like those corpses in zombie movies that just keep staggering on long after they’re dead, liberal officials in Pennsylvania and New Jersey are still lunging after the nuns.

The President of the Becket religious liberty firm defending the Sisters said, “They actually ended up telling the court today that they weren’t sure if the mandate they were trying to enforce was legal, but the court should just go ahead and issue an order to enforce it anyway. That argument makes no sense.”

The only difference between them and zombies is that at least zombies value brains.

Agreeing with AOC

By Mike Huckabee

I always try to find areas of agreement with political opponents, so let me take a moment to (seriously) praise Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.  She announced that pigs must be flying because she agrees with the House Republican Freedom Caucus in opposing a surveillance state and allowing facial recognition software, whether the tracking of Americans is done by the government or big tech companies such as Google and Facebook.  I know that seems ironic, since her face is always on social media anyway.  But not everyone wants that.

Rep. Mark Meadows, chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, agreed that facial recognition software is the “sweet spot that brings progressives and conservatives together.”  Complaints are that it not only invades privacy, but it often misidentifies people, minorities at a higher rate than whites, and attacks their civil liberties.

I also hope that both liberals and conservatives will come together in agreement that the solution to that problem is not to demand that the software developers make it even more accurate.

Socialism is not the cure

By Mike Huckabee

Excellent article by John Conlin at the American Thinker on how to convince young people that socialism is not the great cure for poverty and misery that it’s being sold as.  The greatest weapons our side has and that we don’t utilize enough: facts, evidence and reality.

For instance, whenever someone tells you that socialism is better than capitalism at lifting people out of poverty, read this, and you’ll be able to quote the per capita GDP of the USA and two other nations equally blessed with natural resources, before and after those nations embraced socialist-like policies.

Quotes from our Presidents

"No problem of human making is too great to be overcome by human ingenuity, human energy, and the untiring hope of the human spirit."
- George H.W. Bush

Friday humor

By Mike Huckabee

To kick off Memorial Day weekend, a little Friday humor from P.J. O’Rourke: Let’s end all the anger over income inequality and class fury at the rich by making wealthy people stop wearing T-shirts and doing cool, fun stuff and forcing them to dress in uncomfortable corsets, spats and top hats again while playing polo and listening to boring music.

By Mike Huckabee

Michael Avenatti claims his latest indictment has Trump’s fingerprints all over it.  No, Michael: you were indicted because Stormy Daniels’ $300,000 book advance had YOUR fingerprints all over it.

    Facial recognition:
Good call for Meadows etc, Very scary if abused, & with ex actor types, makeup artists etc one can easily dodge FR via masks etc.
See Mission impossible movies to date & Tom Cruise & others.
Take back to drawing board or scrap FR.
ideal for some select jobs IE Bank CEO, Finance, rare metals, etc maybe.
    For Gen Public???
Update software alone & X ray to see through "mask" if any.
Only use for pre hire in select positions.
