Today's Commentary ---  AUTOPSY of a Dead Coup -- McCabe follow-up now that 60 MINUTES has aired  -- Jussie Smollett Update  -- RIP Pat Caddell --- Politics 101 -- Due Process Rights -- "Blue State Model" -- Another Democrat nightmare  -- Evening Edition -- Daily Verse

In my most recent commentary about the McCabe interview, I mentioned that former FBI General Counsel James Baker testified last fall that he’d been told Rosenstein had the support of two Cabinet members for the removal of Trump via the 25th Amendment. Some media outlets have mentioned this bit of information as they would say “please pass the butter,” but it’s stunning, especially when one is reminded of who the two Cabinet members reportedly were. So it was important to me to go back and research the timeline on what was reported, when it was said, and by whom, and to lay it out in an easily understandable way, so here goes…

The New York Times reported last September 21 that, according to their sources, not only had Rosenstein talked about invoking the 25th Amendment, but he had said he thought he could persuade at least two Cabinet members to do it: John Kelly, then head of Homeland Security, and...JEFF SESSIONS. (Recall that Sessions hired Rosenstein.) That seems like blockbuster news, but, then again, it came from the NYT, which has jumped on numerous reports that turned out to be wrong. Maybe that’s why that detail seems to have disappeared into the ether until now.

McCabe follow-up now that 60 MINUTES has aired

By Mike Huckabee

Cue Scott Pelley: “Former acting [FBI] Director Andrew McCabe is about to describe behind-the-scenes chaos in 2017 after President Trump fired FBI Director James Comey. In the days that followed, McCabe says that law enforcement officials discussed whether to secretly record a conversation with the President and whether Mr. Trump could be removed from office through invoking the 25thAmendment.”

Well, there it is, right on 60 MINUTES: evidence of the “bloodless coup” that has seemed apparent for about two years to those paying attention. McCabe is being investigated for lying to his own FBI colleagues who were conducting a probe into media leaks, and he may be shading the truth about this as well, but we get a pretty good idea of what was going on at the FBI. These were people overstepping their bounds for the purpose of taking down the President of the United States.

Oh, but Pelley still made it about Trump, implying that Trump’s behavior sparked this madness and asking McCabe, with deadly seriousness, “Are you saying that the President is in league with the Russians?” McCabe is a lifelong Republican, Pelley noted, who had “a sterling 21-year career at the FBI, serving as head of counterterrorism and number two under Comey.” The implication: how could someone as reputable as this be caught up in misdeeds at the FBI unless he was driven to it by this President?

Jussie Smollett Update

By Mike Huckabee

While the national news media have stepped on more rakes than Sideshow Bob in the past month, give credit where it’s due: many local reporters are genuine professionals who work hard to dig up the facts and bring the public real news.  For instance, while national media figures were unquestioningly repeating the Jussie Smollett attack story and using it as a weapon to attack President Trump and his supporters, some local Chicago reporters were burning shoe leather to get to the truth.  Kudos to them for showing their overpaid coastal colleagues how the job is supposed to be done.

Speaking of the Smollett story, there have been a number of new developments.  For instance, the two brothers police described as “persons of interest” released a statement claiming that contrary to previous press reports, they are from America, not Nigeria, and they are not anti-Trump. Also, Smollett has reportedly fired the attorney who represented Michael Cohen and hired new attorneys and a “crisis management team” (i.e., spin doctors).

Also, according to the local news site, federal authorities are looking into connections between an alleged threatening letter sent to Smollett and the alleged attack a week later.  It would be cool if this bizarre case were solved by the US Postal police.

This story also reveals that there might have been a witness to the alleged attack, a woman who was looking down from her apartment window.  But what she claims she saw doesn’t sound like what Smollett described.  Of course, she probably wouldn’t make for a good witness in court since she admits she was smoking pot at the time.  But then, this entire story sounds like something someone would come up with after smoking a lot of pot. Details at the link.

RIP Pat Caddell

By Mike Huckabee

Deepest condolences and prayers today for the family of pollster Pat Caddell, who died Saturday at 68 after suffering a stroke.  Caddell first came to notice as a Democratic pollster who helped Jimmy Carter get elected, but in recent years, he’d become a Fox News contributor and advised some Trump supporters.

Caddell was also a guest on my TBN TV show.  He was a good man, a throwback to the time when people put facts and the good of America over the good of their party, and when people of differing political views showed respect for each other and engaged in actual debates to find solutions and common ground.  Sadly, there seems to be little place for that in politics these days, but Pat Caddell set an excellent example for anyone who would like to return to a more sane and respectful style of politics.

Politics 101

By Mike Huckabee

Never introduce a radical new concept that you don’t want your opponents to use against you.  For instance, if you’re going to declare some places to be “sanctuary counties” for criminal illegal immigrants where immigration laws don’t apply, don’t be surprised when a more conservative county comes up with the idea of declaring itself to be a “Second Amendment sanctuary” where gun control laws don’t apply against people protecting themselves from criminals.

The only problem is that it should be unnecessary because the entire USA is already a “Second Amendment sanctuary.”  That’s why the right to keep and bear arms is in the Second Amendment.

Due Process Rights

By Mike Huckabee

I try to be consistent in my principles and not change them to fit the shifting political winds.  For instance, I defended Brett Kavanaugh’s due process rights, but I have also defended those same rights for liberals who faced calls for their heads over accusations for which there had yet to be a trial or even any evidence.  I do that because without due process rights for anyone who is accused, there can be no justice, and in America, justice should wear a blindfold. That means it doesn’t matter who the accused is; race, gender, wealth or lack of it, political views and all other traits are irrelevant: all that matters is the evidence.  This shouldn’t be a “left or right” issue, it should be something that every American agrees on.

Unfortunately, some Americans – some of whom have reached disturbingly high places in government – only realize the importance of such bedrock American principles as due process rights when they’re in a position to need them themselves.

"Blue State Model"

By Mike Huckabee

In recent years, New Yorkers have gotten used to seeing residents and businesses move out to escape the high taxes, heavy regulations, bureaucratic corruption, micromanagement and other crushing burdens of “progressive” blue state leftism.

Still, this latest story must set a new speed record for high-tailing it out of New York.

Amazon had barely decided to locate its new headquarters in Queens when all the liberal politicians and activists swarmed like ants at a picnic, accusing the company of “greed” for accepting tax breaks to move in, demanding more pay and benefits for workers, and raising other typical leftist complaints.  Seeing that this was going to be more trouble than it was worth, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said “thanks but no thanks” and pulled out of the deal, taking his $2.5 billion building project and 25,000 new jobs with him.

That’s right: the “blue state model” in New York is so hostile to business that businesses are now fleeing New York before they even open there.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who is already facing blowback over his inhuman abortion bill and sweating over a $2 billion+ drop in tax revenues is now saddled with the bad publicity from this debacle.

Meanwhile, leftwing activists such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are crowing about their victory in driving away Amazon.  She tweeted, “Today was the day a group of dedicated, everyday New Yorkers and their neighbors defeated Amazon’s corporate greed, its worker exploitation, and the power of the richest man in the world.”

Actually, they didn’t defeat his power.  His power is that he can take his 25,000 jobs (which, incidentally, have a starting pay of $15 an hour, not below minimum wage, as she apparently believes) and put them anywhere he likes.  And if New York’s political and union environment is hostile to that, then other states would be more than happy to roll out the red carpet, which they probably bought on Amazon.  As for AOC, let’s hope she runs for reelection on a campaign slogan that highlights her two greatest achievements so far: “I brought you the Green New Deal and helped drive away 25,000 new jobs!”

It’s no surprise that I’ve seen joke caps and other merchandise popping up online that read “MABA: Make Alexandra Bartend Again.”  With her kind of leadership, bartending jobs may be all that her constituents will be able to get.

Another Democrat nightmare

By Mike Huckabee

If you thought the “Green New Deal” was an awfully benign and misleading name for an attempt to impose socialist control over your entire life, then try this:

There’s a bill moving through the House (H.R. 1) that allegedly “reforms” the election process.  What it would actually do is radically transform America by making vote fraud easier and criminalizing efforts to stop it, allowing all felons to vote the minute they get out of prison, usurping the right of states to run their own elections, shifting power over elections to a partisan appointed board in Washington, and in general, assuring that Democrats cement themselves into one-party rule forever.  Naturally, like the “Green New Deal,” it’s backed by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other deep-thinking leftwing extremists.  And what is this bill called?

The “For the People Act of 2019.”

Why am I reminded of the “Twilight Zone” episode where the space aliens’ book titled “To Serve Man” turns out to be a cookbook?
