Friday night, I went on Sean Hannity’s show with guest host Jason Chaffetz to talk about malfeasance at the FBI regarding the Bruce Ohr testimony and the fraudulent FISA warrant applications --- all the things we’ve been talking about here. I described the situation as “the three C’s”: corruption, conspiracy and cover-up.” We might also add the word “clouds,” because just when a big dose of sunshine might be the best disinfectant with which to attack the disease, the media are doing all they can to cloud the facts. One of the most disgraceful and disheartening things of all is the utter lack of interest that most in the media have in addressing the problem.
Lindsay Graham has now come out and said what we’ve been observing for some time: that if the situation were reversed –- if Republicans had pulled the same kind of underhanded and unconstitutional tricks to spy on Hillary’s campaign, investigate her when she’d done nothing wrong (hard to imagine her doing nothing wrong, but we’re talking hypothetically here), and keep her out of power –- the media would be screaming bloody murder about it. Can you even imagine the collective rage that would clog the airwaves and editorial pages? But since this was done to Donald Trump, we haven’t been able to trust the mainstream media to expose any of it. They dismiss it as a "distraction." If it weren’t for a relative handful of undeterred reporters and analysts such as Sara A. Carter, John Solomon, Gregg Jarrett, Catherine Herridge and watchdogs such as Tom Fitton of Judicial Watch, we wouldn’t have ever found out what we sadly know to be true.
And that is this: At the highest levels of the FBI and the Justice Department, there was an intentional effort to stage what we see now was no less than a coup against the elected President. They were using our own taxpayer dollars to do it. These were the people who were supposed to be upholding the law, not using it for their own shameful purposes, and we ought to see them arrested and frog-marched across federal property right into the slammer for what they have done.
It’s unbelievable that such a level of corruption exists among this many people at the top.
In their minds, the mere fact that the unconventional Donald Trump got elected –- when he wasn’t “supposed” to –- excuses them for anything they do. Say anything, lie to a court, violate official policy, create fake evidence, drop legitimate investigations and create illegitimate ones, leak to the media, ruin people and consider them collateral damage, offer immunity and plea deals to the real lawbreakers, hide and redact documents, even (yes) “collude” with Russians.
Jason asked me what Trump needs to do now; I answered that he’s simply got to have an attorney general who, if he or she can’t depend on people in Washington to root out the corruption, will go out to the field offices and bring a team together that will fearlessly investigate. Force DOJ and FBI personnel to turn over all documents, unredacted, to the congressional oversight committees.
This is not about politics –- not about whether or not somebody likes or doesn’t like President Trump. This is about the preservation of our system of government that elects people and empowers them. It’s also about whether or not we can trust law enforcement. If we have this kind of corruption in our law enforcement agencies, then we have something that truly does take us to the end of our republic. That’s how much this matters.
As I told Jason, when people have the power to take your liberty away –- which law enforcement does; they can put you in jail, ruin your life –- and those same people become corrupt, then your whole system utterly breaks down, and I think we’re on the verge of that right now.
I would tell Democrats who want to be honest brokers that they need to step up and do that. Democrats used to care about equal justice under the law, treating the poor and politically unconnected in exactly the same way as the rich and powerful. That is not happening now, and consequently we’re becoming a nation of cynics. (Remember what I just wrote about cynicism after the revelations about Bruce Ohr, with a link to Kurt Schlichter’s very cynical rant?) We can’t afford to have that kind of environment in a constitutional republic. We have to have confidence that the Constitution actually means what it's supposed to mean.
Right now, Robert Mueller’s special counsel team continues undeterred, despite being exposed as the spawn of a top-level hoax. I realize how blunt that sounds, but we have evidence now that it’s true beyond a reasonable doubt. The FBI has tried to keep this from us for a long time, by ignoring subpoenas, slow-walking documents and redacting them heavily, but by now we get the picture. In fact, members of Trump’s own legal team, including Rudy Giuliani, Jay Sekulow and Marty Raskin, are putting together a report of their own, a “counter-report” that will seek to delegitimize Mueller’s investigation.
Giuliani told The Daily Beast that the report will have two sections, one of which will allege conflicts of interest within federal law enforcement agencies. That one currently runs 58 pages. (My guess is that Rod Rosenstein, James Comey and Mueller himself figure prominently in that section.) The second part, still of indeterminate length, will deal with allegations against the President: the so-called “collusion” with Russians to sway the 2016 election, for which there is no evidence, and the “obstruction” stemming from incidents such as Trump’s firing of then-FBI Director Comey, which was actually well within his authority as President. If the report goes over 100 pages, it will also require an executive summary. According to Giuliani, most of the information to be included has already been made public, as opposed to secret grand jury information or new interview material. It will no doubt be familiar to us, as we’ve been closely following the revelations day by day for a long time.
The team may include an additional section to deal with revelations surrounding former Trump attorney Michael Cohen. I would imagine that one would address the guilty plea Cohen copped that curiously includes two counts of campaign finance violations that weren’t actually violations, as they involved Trump’s legal use of his own personal funds to handle a personal matter.
They started working on the report in July and should have it ready in two or three weeks, perhaps sooner. Depending on what happens with the Mueller investigation, they may or may not use it. But I’d say they have a solid argument that the whole thing was illegitimate from the get-go and that anything the special counsel is pursuing now is “fruit of the poisonous tree.”
