A sharp letter from reader Al P. will serve as a great introduction to today's story:

"Great summary [on AG Barr's appointment of U.S. Attorney John Durham]. But one point about Durham is missing. [It] Glossed over his work on the Bulger case. He prosecuted and convicted FBI hot shots who had protected a criminal. And who was heading the Boston office at the time? Mr. Robert Mueller.

"If you are picking Durham, you are sending a very clear shot that you mean business. You're aiming to prosecute FBI/DOJ hot shots who went after the President after protecting a criminal. (And Mueller's peeps are knee deep in it.)

"Oh, and Durham is already confirmed to be investigating former FBI Chief Counsel James Baker's leaking. So Durham has already been involved in this Russia Hoax nonsense for a long while.

"William Barr is not playing games. The bad guys know it. The selection of Durham proves it."

Alabama votes to ban all abortions

By Mike Huckabee

The Alabama House voted overwhelmingly to pass a law that would ban virtually all abortions.  Of course, federal courts are expected to block it because it violates Roe v. Wade.  But that’s the intention: to appeal it to the Supreme Court as a challenge to Roe v. Wade.

There’s more at the link, but bear in mind, this is only the very first step.  There will be endless media furor over this bill, but the real fireworks will come if and when it makes it to the High Court.  All I’ll say now is read the full story, then stay tuned.

Defending Rashida Tlaib

By Mike Huckabee

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is once again trying to defend freshman Rep. Rashida Tlaib after an outrageous comment sparked outrage.  Pelosi is using the now-cliched defense of impugning the motives of people who complained about Tlaib’s revisionist history and demanding that they apologize to her.  Not happening.  You know a Democrat has gone too far when even the hosts on CNN refuse to play along.  They’ll bend over backwards to cover for Democrats, but asking them to pretend that people who allied themselves with Hitler should be lauded for all they sacrificed to create a safe haven for Jews would snap anybody’s spine.

https://www.westernjournal.com/ct/watch-even-cnn-host-cant-help-call-rashida-tlaibs-attempt-rewrite-holocaust-history/

Joe Lieberman, a relic of the days when the Democratic leadership had integrity and didn’t whitewash anti-Semitism in its own ranks, also refused to rewrite history and praise the Palestinians for saving the Jews. So I guess we know one older, white Democratic elder statesman who won’t be running for President next year.

If you’re interested in knowing the real history of that region, check out that second link.  Among the things you’ll learn is that the Palestinians didn’t sacrifice to provide a safe haven for the Jews.  They went to war and Israel won.

Trump says Iran war plan story is "fake news"

By Mike Huckabee

Certain media outlets seem eager to promote a narrative that would lead us into war with Iran, but President Trump says that’s “fake news.”  I understand that they prioritize running a scoop over protecting the secrecy of US military plans, but they could at least wait until they have a real scoop.  Don’t damage America’s interests and help goad Iran into attacks and America into military retaliation over something that’s not even verified.

And please don’t try to speak for Trump or expect that he will tell you in advance what our military plans might be if hostilities do break out.  The strategy of announcing in advance to our enemies exactly how many troops we plan to send where, and how long we plan to fight before pulling them out, ended in January 2017.

Warren rejects Fox News townhall

By Pat Reeder

Sen. Elizabeth Warren rejected an offer from Fox News to be the focus of a townhall, explaining by going off on a typically unhinged, left-wing, anti-Fox News rant.  She claimed that appearing would help legitimize Fox News.  I hate to break this to her and her tribal elders, but she’s the one who could use more legitimacy.  Appearing on a network that actually presents all sides of issues instead of just the left side might be a baby step in that direction.

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2020-election/elizabeth-warren-turns-down-fox-news-town-hall-calls-network-n1005431

Warren will lose out on being seen by the biggest audience in cable news, something that her presidential rivals were smart enough to take advantage of.  The Bernie Sanders townhall on Fox drew nearly 2.6 million viewers, while the Howard Schulz townhall pulled 1.9 million. Amy Klobuchar also recently appeared, and Pete Buttigieg is set for May 8th.  It appeared to me that all these candidates have been treated professionally and respectfully.

With her angry rejection of Fox News’ invitation, Sen. Warren made it clear that she is intolerant, hot-headed, rabidly partisan and willing to freeze out reporters who might question her too hard; she makes bad decisions based on preconceived prejudices; and she will demonize and refuse to talk to people who aren’t already supporters.  In short, her response to being invited on a Fox News townhall makes a more eloquent argument than I ever could for why she should never be entrusted with the Presidency of the United States.

Sanctuary

By Mike Huckabee

As long as we’re going to have “sanctuary cities,” isn’t it nice to know that they don’t discriminate about whom they’re going to offer sanctuary to?  For instance, a new study by the Immigration Reform Law Institute found that over “a 27-month period ending on December 31, 2017, law enforcement agencies and jails refused to honor 44 immigration holds on citizens from countries the United States has designated as state sponsors of terrorism.”

Out of those 44 illegals protected from federal authorities who were trying to deport them, 39 were deemed by ICE as level 1 and 2 threats, for offenses including “homicide, fraud, kidnapping, burglary, sexual assault and aggravated assault.”

https://www.westernjournal.com/study-sanctuary-policies-protect-illegals-terror-sponsored-states/

Leaders of these cities like to cite Emma Lazarus’ poem on the Statue of Liberty to justify their actions.  But that poem says to send us “your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”  It doesn’t say, “Send us your murderers, terrorists, rapists and pushers of drugs, and we’ll let our citizens be killed by these thugs.”

Farewell To A Comedy Legend And a Champion of Great Music

By Pat Reeder, “Huckabee” writer/pop culture historian (http://www.facebook.com/hollywoodhifibook )

This is shaping up to be a very sad week in show business news, with the losses of Peggy Lipton, Doris Day, and now, six-time Emmy-winning comic Tim Conway, who has died at 85 after a long period of deteriorating health.

https://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/celebrities-react-tim-conway-death

At a time in the ‘60s and ‘70s when comedy was getting increasingly edgy and political, Conway’s gentle Midwestern persona and slapstick physical comedy were a hilarious throwback to the great silent comics.  He never found a starring hit series of his own (he used to joke about how many failed pilots and short-lived series he’d had), although he did enjoy some later-in-life solo success in a series of parody instructional videos such as “Dorf on Golf.”

But Conway will mostly be remembered as the funniest “second banana” supporting comic in the business.  He got his start in local TV in Cleveland and first came to national attention on Steve Allen’s show, after his friend and mentor Rose Marie recommended him.  Then came his first prime time hit as the bumbling Ensign Parker on “McHale’s Navy” (1962-’66), followed by the role that made him most famous as the man Harvey Korman couldn’t keep a straight face around on “The Carol Burnett Show.”

There will be many tributes online that post his most famous bits, such as Dorf, the Old Man, Mr. Tudball and his secretary Mrs. Whiggens, and the dentist who keeps accidentally injecting himself with Novocain.  But I know “Huckabee” fans expect me to direct you to more obscure trivia.  So here is Conway’s little known, very first comedy album with his partner from Cleveland TV, Ernie Anderson:

Here are some very early sketches from his local TV days:

And here’s a write up by blogger/comedy writer Mark Evanier, on his personal encounters with Conway (all quite positive and hilarious) and the inside story on how those “crack up Harvey Korman” sketches were filmed and why the writers weren’t happy about them.

RIP John Lombardi

By Pat Reeder

I would also like to add a personal tribute to another show business figure, legendary New York City radio DJ John Lombardi, who died suddenly on Monday of an aggressive form of cancer.

He was a good friend to Laura and me, and a strong supporter of her music career.  John hosted the “Lounging With Lombardi” show on City World Radio, and tirelessly championed great lounge jazz and swing, both the original artists such as Vic Damone and Bobby Darin, and the many fine current performers keeping that sophisticated sound alive in this dire musical era.

John loved Laura’s music: he played it often, interviewed her, helped arrange for her to perform at the posh Metropolitan Room, came to that show and showed us around his favorite Manhattan haunts.  He was one of the great eccentric figures of the Big Apple, with his waxed handlebar mustache in perfect points, his ever-present cigar, and his laminated press pass always around the neck of his colorful Hawaiian shirts.  He knew every great jazz venue and performer and every authentic Italian restaurant in town, and all the musicians and chefs knew and loved him.  He exuded a joy in great music, food and life and spread it everywhere he went to everyone he met.

Many of his shows are archived on YouTube and Spreaker.com.  Check them out if you love music in the Rat Pack/Julie London style.  Here’s one where he played Laura’s first album, “Keep It To Yourself.”  Rest in peace, John. You will be sorely missed.  I hope they saved a box seat for you at the nightly Sinatra concert in Heaven.
