There’s a saying going around the Internet: “Progressives ruin everything.” By inappropriately injecting leftist politics into every corner of life, they’ve managed to spoil the Oscars, late night comedy, the NFL, NASCAR and countless other diversions that Americans used to be able to turn to when they wanted to put politics aside and come together.

Now, they’re even trying to ruin one of the most cherished books and movies among liberals, “To Kill A Mockingbird.” The estate of author Harper Lee is suing to stop a new Broadway adaptation because the creators decided that her hero, Atticus Finch, one of the best role models in all of literature, should start out as a “racist apologist” and gradually become more woke. I guess they automatically assume that as a white male Southerner, he couldn’t possibly be anything other than a racist jerk from the get-go. As producer Scott Rudin puts it, “the world has changed since then” and he “can't and won't present a play that feels like it was written in the year the book was written in terms of its racial politics. It wouldn't be of interest.”

To refresh your memory, Atticus Finch is a small town lawyer in Alabama in the 1930s

who helps those in trouble even if they have no money, and who believes that everyone deserves equal justice. He and his children have to withstand scorn from racist neighbors when he takes on the hopeless task of defending a black man wrongly accused of raping a white woman. I don’t know what part of that story audiences today wouldn’t find dramatically interesting.

If Rudin thinks the “racial politics” don’t reflect today’s PC attitudes, well, I would hope not, since it's set in Alabama in the 1930s. The racial politics feel like they’re from an earlier time because they ARE, and thank God for that! As to which side has a better grasp on people in Alabama were like in the 1930s, I’d have to go with Harper Lee, whose story was inspired by her own family's life in Monroeville, Alabama, in the '30s and a true incident that happened nearby in 1936. As long as Rudin is rewriting both history and classic literature to make it more modern, the plot also involves a woman who lies about being raped; according to today’s PC rules, that never happens; so he'll have to make the black man guilty. What else? Will Boo Radley now be transgender? Will there be a mockingbird that Tweets?

It’s up to the lawyers whether this mockery of “Mockingbird” ever makes it to Broadway, but if so, I’ll probably put it on my “Things-to-see” list right after that new movie of “A Wrinkle In Time” that replaced God, Scripture and Jesus with New Age hokum, self-empowerment and Oprah.

"To Kill A Mockingbird" is one of my favorite Novels and also a great Movie. Someone should remind these so-called PC's that they are minority group who should not try to tell others (us) what we should watch or participate in. Just be miserable by yourselves and not expect too much from anyone else. Thanks Governor Huckabee for your well grounded and Christ-like approach to the events of importance. Watch your TV show on TBN as often as I can. Allen Hare.

    Dear Governor Huckabee,

Harper Lee was actually a dear friend of my family, and we lived in the same apartment building located in New York City. When she was alive, "Nell" as we knew her, told me that several entities kept trying to produce versions of her book either as a show or other type of entertainment, and she was very much against that. I am glad that those who represent her estate, and her stellar integrity as a person, are acting on her behalf, even now. Greed is rampant in our society, as is immorality and those out to take advantage of others.

I saw the movie when it first hit the theaters back in the 60’s. Even though I’m a good ole souther boy I throughly enjoyed the movie and
have since bought the movie and the book.

Leave it to Hollywood and the left wing nuts to ruin the truth. Mark Twain’s writings banned from some schools because folks don’t want
to know that some have used the “N” word in the past. According the history I’ve read the North has been (and maybe still is) more biased
that the South even as far back as the Civil War.

How in the world can they try to make To Kill a Mockingbird into something it is not!!!!???? Atticus Finch was a fair man; maybe the Liberals don't like that! Wish "they'd" leave "history" alone.

I concur, they just won't leave things alone! The agenda seems to be mess up the good stuff! Next they'll be trying to change Mr Smith in Washington! I love your show and really appreciate your straight forward candor and appropriate humor!!! Thanks for being a light in the darkness!!! Blessings from West Virginia

"To kill a mockingbird" is my favorite book of all time. It encompasses so many issues beside race. Each character is developed with grace and insight. I was 12 when I first read the book. I lived in a biracial neighborhood. Black girls were my friends, and I had went to grade school with them. When I graduated in 1968, the girls I had shared so many childhood memories with, were now part of the civil rights movement. I could no longer be called their friend, because I was white. I was crushed, and 50 years later, I still am. I had identified with Atticus, Boo, Maude, et al. Each character a lesson in how to love, respect, and learn from each other. They were how I wanted to see people, and how I wanted people to see me. When the movie came out, I was skeptical that it would come close to the book. I was so surprised! The book had come alive. I have read the book, and watched the movie, too many times to count. Each time it is a joy, and I find myself so moved. If the everyday news has been so vile in covering these issues, this book will bring you back to center. We should all read this book, that will eternally be relevant to every time, and learn to love and accept people as they are. Above all else, respect each other, and live together!

Mike, I couldn't vote in your poll about arming teachers--nothing came up! I would certainly be in favor of arming teachers if they are willing to be armed. (Of course there would be checks to make sure the teacher wouldn't just fire at a difficult student, etc.) As to progressives ruining everything, yes they are! I am thankful for your voice of truth and season.

"Progressive"?? It seems we have been heading down the path of re-writing history for quite some time now. How absurd to ban books like Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, to do away with bacon ads on bus routes, to tear down monuments (Hmmm...seems to me I recall that being done in the Middle East by terrorists) now deemed "offensive", to eliminating the ten commandments and nativity scenes from public view. This is "progressive"?? Sounds more like oppressive to me. You cannot erase history, you cannot alter decades old and centuries old works of art and literature without becoming the fool who refuses to learn from the past.

Mr. Huckabee I am so much in agrement with you. As a 77 year old male who did't read the book untill i was in my 70,s I felt I connected with this story. History is what it is and can not be changed no matter how someone rewrites it. A lot that happened was said but it did happen.

Mike, I can tell you where all this nonsense about TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD has come from: the author herself. Just read the book she had published just before she died: GO SET A WATCHMAN. It's the most confusing, antithetical sequel I have EVER read (and I'm an English professor!). It deliberately destroys the premise of the former book, and it leaves the reader with a bad taste in her mouth. In the sequel, Scout has become a self-righteous prig -- a lawyer in New York who supposedly has had a few eye-opening experiences -- and Atticus supposed displays an inherent racism that "has been there all along." I don't know WHAT Harper Lee was thinking, except she wanted to go on a rant about racism, and figured she could use the chariot she had already invented. I firmly believe the quality and impact of the first novel was a divine accident, judging from the un-quality of the second.

I grew up in S. W. OK and I first become aware of my parents bigotry at a young age. We had a Mexican playmate for awhile, he was funny and we had good play times. One day our Dad told him to leave and never come back. I can still see his face and the pain there. I instinctively knew it wasn't right but it opened my eyes to other instances of they're bigotry. Bigotry disgusts me to this day. Progressive bigotry especially. It's up to we the people as to how much of their special form of racism we will tolerate. Are we going to do nothing while they continue to vilify white people?

Barack H Obama and the radical Democrats have turned this country into something I don't even recognize. I shudder to think what would have happened had Hillary Clinton been elected President. This story has always reminded me of my Grandparents generation. Nicely done and quite gentle in many ways... people with strong character. I remember back in the 80s that the liberals were demanding that Disney change The Pirates of the Carribean ride so the pirates were not chasing the women. In the 90s they were trying to kill Christmas and replace it with Happy Holidays. Disney said that they would continue to celebrate Christmas not necessarily the religious side of it. Hillary Clinton recently said that white men tell their wives how to vote. Their big recent lies include Trump being a racist... The Democratic Party has become a political party of hatred, division, destruction. The very things they support have transformed them in terrible ways. They at least had some credibilty in the 50s and early 60s... now they are a selfish and hateful group of extremists. I suspect that labor unions will support Trump in the next election.

I'm 64, loved reading when I learned to read, and also grew up in the south. Things like this story did take place, unfortunately. It's a great story about just what racism is......and isn't. And, Gregory Peck was so good in the movie, he won Best Actor in 1963, for that very movie. Are they, the liberals, going to completely rewrite history? And, since when is a movie with character, showing compassion, and leading young people in the right (no, CORRECT) way? I guess I'll just have to give up being surprised at anything anymore.

Thank you for the survey you sent me. No one has ever asked for my advice before. Even my husband. However in this case I do not feel like my opinion should be considered. I am not qualified but I also do not believe that the political climate today is responsive to the ordinary individual. Your motives may be the best, but you understand how difficult it is to make a difference. I respect you a lot but voting is about all I am willing to do to get involved. It's really true, that the progressive left is ruining so many things I used to be able to enjoy, I always loved watching the Academy Awards, absolutely wouldn't miss them. Now I cannot!! watch the program. I'm afraid I'll have to see George Clooney and Meryl Streep, sadly, she used to be one of my heroes. I loved watching David Letterman, Now, Cannot watch Colbert. I've been watching Madame Secretary with Tea Leoni, one of my favorites, but I'm beginning to have second thoughts. First, it was global warming, and last night a couple of the characters ruined relationships with one of our allies because of the LGBT refugees. I'm all for helping people, really, but stop shoving the cause down my throat. Remember "Unbroken" the book about the Olympic Hero who was a Japanese POW in WWII. In the book he was literally saved by Billy Graham. The entire episode of Graham's Christian influence was dispensed with in the movie. Thanks Angelie Jolie!!
Now they have to ruin "To Kill A Mockingbird"? Well, Atticus will always, from beginning to end, will always be a hero to me, and we know where his sympathies lie.

    Mike:

I did not have the good fortune to grow up in the South but, by growing up with the values of my A of G Church, I could pass for Southern Baptist. Meaning, Jesus Loves the Little Children, All the Children of the World, has real meaning for me, as I know it does for you.........

To me, the southern (Christian) culture had (and has) many transcendent cultural and spiritual mores' which should not be denigrated by revisionists but should be presented factually and with an even hand. The revisionism espoused here will only satisfy haters.

Thank you for flagging this story.

Personal note: I grabbed a Dardanelle, AR girl (Tom Cotton's town) as my wife. 63 years later I still thank my Lord for sending her to me. Family lore recounts that my mother-in law and her (black) neighbor "wet nursed" each other's babies. So much for the "bigotry" of the south.

Parents, wake up to the agenda here to wipe out the truth in our history. Our school history books have been re-written to reflect a false narrative. Read the school books that your kids are learning from and Don't be afraid to point out the lies. If your kids Don't learn the truth from you, where will they learn It? "To Kill A Mockingbird " is a wonderful old classic. To change the story is a travesty. I will not waste my money or my time to see it. I won't enrich the pockets of those that lie. Thank you, Mike Huckabee for enlightening us, once again.

Peggy Noonan of the Wall Street Journal's article "Deliverance..etc" of 3/17-18 says of the movie "Deliverance"; "That movie did more to shape the preconceptions (of Southern rurals)of a generation of young Democrats than any other, except "To Kill a Mockingbird". I always felt that the latter was wildly popular precisely because it fed the (mostly yankee) belief that all Southerners with rare exceptions were murderous retards. The continued intense interest makes those who love"Mockingbird" feel superior to those retards. Having been born in 1930 just 18 miles from Harper Lee I know that the perception was seriously flawed against many of my contemporaries. Against the society, yes, but not nearly all individuals, most of whom were fine people.

Something novel and out-of-the-box would be if Hollywood produced a play or movie with a deep South setting where Racism is NOT the central character. Even the local network media affiliates, directed by corporate pot-stirrers, agitate daily. However, contrary to conventional stereotype, the reality of most southerners does not orbit the liberal hate ball. Hollywood is just incapable of telling a good regional story, period, without preaching down to a population they've never met and consider too low-down to shake hands with. Some things never change.... like the bigotry by anti-South liberals. Separating liberals from geographic bigotry is like neutralizing a poisonous viper. When your politics are based on identifying groups to slander, shame, and discriminate against in order to pick up votes from another group, division is the natural conclusion.

    Hi Mike,
Two things we must always do: a) Go to the voting booth, take everyone we can with us, and vote for the Christian with the most Constitutional and Conservative view point available, and b) vote at the cash register by not attending movies that will attempt to rewrite history, not going to NFL games or any sport where they disrespect our country and our flag while also taking our money, by not renting cars from Enterprise Rental company and others who are Anti Constitution and Anti 2A.
And we must congregate and take back every corner of every street in every town in every state in this beautiful country and stand proud with our President Donald Trump.
Question for you: what is the very best way for us to communicate with and control our out of control representatives in Government?
    Thank you.

I have been saying this for years "Democrats screw up everything they touch". By the time our great grandkids are old enough to understand things those things will be unrecognizable and human history will be no more than a propaganda flyer that lines the bird cage. If we still have birds! I mean they voted against blacks being citizens then against having the vote, then if that wasn't enough they voted against women having the vote for segregation. They still are members of an support the KKK that they founded. It was a Democratic president who made it possible for congress to help itself to our Social Security money and don't forget it was a Democatic congress who passed a healthcare bill before they even read it. I'm sure the Republicans had their share of blunders but why is it we don't hear about them from the bias media. The left doesn't want to open that can of corruption.

I am so sorry to hear this. "To Kill a Mockingbird" is my # 1 favorite movie. As you know Mr. Huckabee, liberal's need chaos. It distracts them from seeing themselves. Any representation of sincere virtue, selflessness or humility is intolerable to liberals. Seeing what they can never be is unbearable and must be destroyed.

I hope this negative distortion of the 1962 academy award winning movie does not come to fruition. As for the depraved liberals all I can advise is prayer. Profound low self-esteem is extremely dangerous and incurable.

I am so glad I have my own mind and don't have to hitchhike on the back of a great novel by a great author like Rudin is trying to attempt. If he thinks his " act" would not be of interest following the original story line then he should create his own without dismembering a classic. He should be creative using his own story line instead of stealing. Why be a thief and a lier too?

What's next? Do Progressives want to rewrite St.Paul's Epistles. After all Paul wrote where that women should be subject to their husbands (a sore point for generations of women). However, Paul further stated men should love their wives like Christ loves his Church. Considering how women were treated then, common sense lets a reasonable person realize the time and place when this statement was written. Oh wait, I forgot. Progressives have a perchance not to think with thought. They just react without reasoning beforehand.

Art used to be one of those things that looked at the world as it exists through another lens. It would tell us through imagination what we have failed to see. All art was original and challenging to the status quo. Art never sought to bastardize earlier art. True art was proud to find a new way to capture the public's attention and provide a perspective that could be revelatory and even make us uncomfortable. Art was not a crusade but an evolution. Take the medium: writing, visual or music, great art abhors banality and appropriation.
If this doesn't fail in the court, it will fail on the stage unless we have slipped so far that we see art as a crude tool of propagandists. The cruelty of low expectations.

One of the greatest books and movie and change things WHY? Make history what you want. Taken down many of the statues of the south and the Civil War as upsetting. Biggest crock I have seen in my 75 yr. Many in my family fought on the South. Not fighting to have slaves and keep blacks as slaves. Most of my family were poor would never would have had a slave. Say that statues are horrible for everyone and most of the time all these years no one said a thing until now racism is being put forward. We had thousands of immigrants here working in Georgia while many blacks had no jobs here WHY? There is a group here many in our universities who are openly taking down this country? Using our young who do not know what to say and follow whatever now? Why can you not hear a conservative and a liberal progressive for ideas on what to believe and not just one type of what is being shoved down their throats. Time the Govt lk into the money going to these schools and say enough stop this now. Many Republicans are sitting by and taking this WHY?
