Facing an exodus of fans that’s left football stadium crowds looking like the turnout at a Martin O’Malley for President fundraiser, the NFL is reportedly desperate enough to offer players $89 million to stand up during the National Anthem. It’s not a straight-up bribe to pretend to show respect for America, but a promise to donate that much over seven years to help African-American communities.
As this article notes, the question is which charities will get the money. There are many that are truly worthy. But if they copy the donations of the protest’s founder, Colin Kaepernick, they’ll be giving to such heavily-politicized groups as a pro-DACA organization and a black revolutionary who’s hiding out in Cuba to avoid facing justice for murdering a New Jersey State Trooper. I know NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is baffled by the negative reactions of the League’s customers thus far, so I’m going to help him out here: If the NFL gives millions of dollars to illegal immigrants and cop killers, most NFL fans are not going to like that. To be clear, I said: “Not.”
