Evening Edition - May 11

May 11, 2020 |

THANK YOU

If you watched “Huckabee” on TBN over the weekend (and I’m sure you all did), you know that I dedicated the show to my wife, Janet. Last week, during our extended family sheltering at home, she tripped over a grandchild’s toy and broke her ankle in three places. She insisted on putting off surgery to fix it until Monday so that we could tape the show (yes, she has a much higher tolerance for pain than I do!)

I want you to know how much she and I appreciate the flood of messages, offering prayers and get well wishes. We believe they had the intended effect: Janet underwent the surgery on Monday, and the doctor says everything went well. She will have to be off her foot entirely for at least eight weeks, so it will be a long summer (and the grandkids had better put their toys up themselves.) Thanks do much again for your concern, and please keep those prayers coming!

LAST STRAW IN CALIFORNIA

Californians have voted further and further left for years. As they have, they’ve watched their borders be erased, illegal alien criminals being welcomed and released from jail (first because ICE wanted to deport them, and now because they might get sick if they stayed in jail, so they have to release them to rob and kill law-abiding citizens.) They’ve watched their taxes and gas prices (due to taxes) skyrocket even as the homeless population exploded and public sanitation became so bad that parks and sidewalks were covered in feces and drug needles and ancient diseases such as typhus made a return. Affordable housing is impossible to find, and small business owners are fleeing to other states. Some areas, such as Silicon Valley, have reverted to the era of feudalism, with the wealthy tech lords protected by security walls and armed guards in their castles (while denouncing security walls and guns for anyone else), as the surfs who work for them shelter in tiny dwellings or in their cars.

Not content with driving out the middle class and small business owners, the leftist leaders passed AB-5, which is killing the growing gig economy (in the name of “helping the workers,” naturally), making it impossible for contract workers from Uber drivers to club musicians to make a living.

And then came the coronavirus, which gave leftist power mongers their long-dreamed-of excuse to “fundamentally transform” society by ordering everyone to just stay home and live off government handouts, no matter how painful or irrational that may be (someone pointed out that leftists want to arrest Americans who go to work to feed their families, but not illegal immigrants because they just want to work to feed their families.) They have now gone so far than even some of the tech titans are starting to cry foul. Like electric car pioneer Elon Musk, who has had enough of the endless lockdown policy.

Musk called the lockdown that’s shuttered his Tesla factory in Fremont “the last straw.” He says he’s filing a lawsuit against the county and plans to move his HQ and future programs to Texas and Nevada, and he might have to close the Fremont plant, depending on how they are treated. He noted that Tesla is the last carmaker left in California. No surprise there.

And how did California officials react to this news? Did they reexamine their policies? Did they try to convince Musk that they could be reasonable, and he should keep his plant in California? Are you kidding? Of course not! San Diego Rep. Lorena Gonzalez, author of the disastrous AB-5 bill, responded by sending a profane tweet cursing Musk (warning: foul language at the link, the kind responsible adults don’t use in public forums.)

Musk offered a perfect reply, but his ultimate reply will come if and when he takes his thousands of jobs and joins the stampede out of California. Let us hope this is the “last straw,” the one that finally convinces Californians to come out of their homes, go to the polls and throw these lunatics out of office, so that they can discover what it feels like not to have a job or be able to pay their rent.

RISING UP

Here’s the latest example of why people across the nation are rising up and defying authorities who try to impose strict lockdown rules that have no bearing on stopping the spread of the COVID-19 (Chinese) coronavirus:

Americans across the nation have been inventive in ways to maintain their sense of community and normalcy while remaining safe. One of these methods has been by keeping families together but safely separate from each other by staying in their own cars at drive-in church services and graduations, drive-in movies and car parades to show support for their schools. It’s an inspiring display of the unquenchable human spirit. And of course, that really ticks off power-mad bureaucrats.

So in Santa Clara County, California, health officials decreed that “parades, ceremonies, and similar gatherings with people outside your household are not allowed, even if everyone stays in their cars.” This obviously would have zero effect on increasing the spread of the virus, so the only possible justification for it is that the officials think that in order to assert their authority, they have to clamp down on all displays of freedom with the mindless zeal of Barney Fife. And it’s going over about as well in Santa Clara as it would in Mayberry. Fortunately, they have their own version of Sheriff Andy Taylor to try to impose some sanity.

Police Chief Eddie Garcia said he will issue warnings to people who hold car parades, but he refused to let his officers write any citations. Barely able to conceal his contempt for the order, he told the press, “I don’t know how any police chief in this county, could look at their community in the face and say, ‘While people are being released out of jails on zero bail, serious criminals, that now we’re going to stop people from holding signs, driving around, and wishing individuals happy birthdays or happy graduations. I certainly can’t look at my community credibly and tell them that.”

Three cheers for Chief Garcia for following the true spirit of the law by refusing to enforce a groundless and unconstitutional order. And to the people of Santa Clara, let me point out a detail from the story: your population is Democrat over Republican by 2-1. If you all got into your cars in November, drove to the polls, and voted the opposite way, the lovers of government power and the ability to abuse it would no longer be able to tell you where or when you’re allowed to drive. Remember: you have it withing your power to tell them where to go.

INSPIRING

Because we could all use a little inspiring news, how about a Huck’s Hero salute to 15-year-old Ryley Ferguson of Knottingley, England? He was out walking his dogs alongside a canal when he saw 15-month-old Reggie Hampton on the opposite bank. The toddler had somehow slipped through a gate while playing in the yard, walked to the canal bank and fell in. He was 30 seconds from drowning. For the rest of this story, click the link, and get ready to throw that big salute to Ryley.

AN IDEA

Most people have tried to follow the guidelines to stay home and be cautious, but as the forecasts for the impact have proven to be grossly over-estimated, the only people who seem to want this to continue are certain elected officials who like telling people what to do.

I’ve been to some countries with authoritarian governments that govern with a brutal iron hand. I’ve always appreciated that as a citizen of the United States of America, I had guaranteed civil liberties and clearly defined rights that would be protected. Even if I actually committed a crime and the entire thing was captured from 6 angles on video, I was still presumed innocent until PROVEN guilty by a jury of my peers and I would be entitled to legal representation and due process. We’ve all been rankled by criminals who did horrible things, but who were protected by the very law that we hoped would put them in prison and away from our communities where they did real damage to the innocent. Then came the pandemic, and with it forced closure of businesses, events, and public places, and even forced demands to wear masks and refrain from even visiting our own relatives. Suddenly, for the first time in my life, my beloved America is starting to look like some of the truly horrible and abusive places I have visited and couldn’t wait to get out of.

This week, a hair salon owner in Dallas was actually put in handcuffs and taken to jail because she refused to apologize to a power-hungry judicial tyrant who gets to wear a robe at taxpayer expense. Her crime was not just that she chose to open her salon so that her employees could earn a living and feed their families. She was jailed because she refused to say the magic words ordered by the judge that she was selfish for allowing her employees to earn money to pay their rent, buy groceries, and pay their bills. The judge gets his paycheck by the way, and it’s a good one—over $150,000 a year. Meanwhile in Washington, members of the Nancy Pelosi-led House refused to return to Washington or to engage in session via online meetings because they didn’t think it was safe. They are fine with YOU driving a truck, working in a hospital or nursing home, answering calls as a firefighter or policeman, or stocking the shelves at your local supermarket. But they’re not going to work. But they are getting paid anyway. And YOU are paying them.

Then it hit me. Want to end the most ridiculous and dictatorial aspects of the shutdown? It’s simple. Whatever level of government orders a shutdown for others, its members should cease being paid until those under the shutdown can return to work. If your business can’t open and YOU can’t earn a living, then your mayor, your county officials, your governor or your Congress who shuts you down shouldn’t take one penny of pay until YOU can. You know what will happen? Those orders will get relaxed. Then it will be up to you whether you feel safe venturing out and opening your business or patronizing a business. It’s called freedom.

We’re Americans and we ought to act like it. And the people who were elected to serve us need to start treating us like Americans with fundamental civil liberties instead of like 1st graders who are told when it’s appropriate to go to the restroom and to line up for a trip to the lunchroom so we can eat what someone else has decided is good for us.

So to mayors, governors, county officials and members of Congress as well as the appointed and employed government officials I say this: Since you’re a public servant and the people you work for AREN’T getting paid, stop collecting YOUR paycheck until they get theirs.

You won’t see out of control judges putting hair stylists in jail for not saying the right words. As I said last week-I fear that I MIGHT get a virus. I fear even more that I will lose the liberties that make being an American unique. I’ve visited some police states. I don’t want to live in one.

Gov. Huckabee, it's worse in the Philippines. The Dems and PH Pres. Duterte -- who has ould our country out to China -- are evil bedfellows. Duterte talked about eradicating corruption when he ran for office but what happened is quite the opposition. He has brought corruption, insatiable greed, murders for the sake of killing, putting behind bars the opposition, and many more horrific, beyond incomprehensible deeds. That's what is going to happen to California if the Dems continue to have control.
But heard the Dems don't like Duterte. Well, it proves really that like forces repel each other.

The government cannot open up fast enough. One of my favorite restaurant "Sweet Tomatoes" closed down every store. This can never be the option to cure a problem again.

I am an ultra conservative and back Trump all the way, but the Dr. Fauci's of the world put a fear in the people and has not left the hearts of Americans. Pray the Democratic states vote our their Governors because of the slow walking opening.

Below is part of an article from our Governor. I had made an earlier comment in regards to our PPE supplies coming from China. I've must of missed the boat because I thought we cut ties from China for supplies & I thought the US was supplying PPE through our US manufacturers. Could you explain why I'm so confused.

**Gov. Ned Lamont on Tuesday said the state has received its single largest shipment of personal protective equipment in its fight to combat the coronavirus.

The equipment, which came from suppliers in China, has been delivered over the last couple of days to the state’s commodities warehouse. It includes 6 million surgical masks, 500,000 protective masks, 100,000 surgical gowns and 100,000 thermometers, the governor said in a press release.

“Today marks another important step as we continue to battle the novel coronavirus,” Lamont said. “I want to personally thank the Chinese people for their continued support during this public health crisis. I would especially like to thank the China Construction Bank for helping facilitate this shipment and for their generous donation. Further cooperation and collaboration between the United States and China is very important as we navigate this global pandemic.”

Thank you Gov. Huckabee!! I totally agree that our government leaders should live by the laws they make, that they should put their retirement funds in with our social security funds and basically live like us!! How can it be that they become millionaires on a salary I am forced to pay them. Oh, also they should not be allowed to increase their pay - that should be a matter of our voting for or against it!

Ouch! Prayers for Janet & a speedy recovery. Watch those toys.
Thank you for all your clear observations of all the news. Now, the mayor of Baltimore is blaming President Trump for that young man's murder (alleged), by the father & his son. This is so crazy! Like it was said again & again, no matter what Trump says or doesn't say, it's his fault. So is this COVID-19 his fault? I missed your show because I was tending to my spouse (dementia is increasing).
I watched today's hearing with all the doctors, most of it. As I suspected what Sen. Sanders, Warren, & Murray where going to ask. Not surprised, politics as usual. This virus came in like a lion, but it's going to be around for some time. I don't think a vaccine can be produced like people would want. Lots of phases to go through to make it safe for the public. I understand about testing too. One day you could be negative & the next day positive. This is the scary part. That's my opinion. As much as I like to see our country come back to work, meet with family, go to church, & just have fun, I'm very concerned people will not keep the guidelines. Some are not as of today. I'm going to do what's best for me & my husband.
I wish this fiasco with collusion is over at the expense of $30/40 million taxpayer dollars, but I do want the AG & Att. Durham to have all the "i's" & "t's" dotted. I do hope that heads will roll with severe punishments.
Well, Biden is staying in the basement, (there's a first for everything), but Obama came out. May be he should stay quiet since this investigation isn't over yet.
Oh, just read an email that our state, CT, (Gov. Lamont) just received, finally, a large shipment of supplies for hospitals, etc. from CHINA!! What is this? I thought the Fed agencies provided all the information where to get supplies, in addition, I thought the government also was supplying these items. Could you comment on this.
I'll also be interested in your next email about what the dem's relief package is all about. $3T!!!

Governor, we love your show! You and Janet are in our thoughts and prayers for Janet’s healing and for you to pamper her back to full health! Your sense of humor is exquisite - under the header, “Last Straw in California”, you bring out a great point concerning feudalism, then mention the creation of “surfs” as an underclass, with the rich hiding behind walls and guards. Governor, but, these “surfs” are a new class of underlings who retreat to the waves on their boards? Bravo!

    Governor Huckabee
Loved your comments regarding California, that is why I left it after living there after 60 years and moved to NV. Being a senior I could not afford to live there any more. Tesla has a gigafactory here in Sparks and should move here. I bet Newsom would hate to see his tax dollars lost!

    Hi Governor-
Best wishes for a speedy recovery for your wife. In Jan. 2019, I stumbled in Florida and popped my left Achilles’ tendon. After weeks of bed rest, I was able to start getting around first with crutches and then with a walker. Hard work. Check with your doctor when you can rent a scooter for her. Medical supply houses rent them for about $25 or $30 a week. I used a regular non motorized version and loved it. Wanted exercise for the non injured leg.
PS Love your columns and appearances on Fox.

I taped last weekend's show and have not watched it yet --it's getting a little depressing to see this and other shows that have the interviews done from 6 ft. apart or from one computer screen to another -- so I did not know about Janet's fall. I'm glad to hear that the surgery went well, and will pray for her during the recovery phase. I'm also praying for our country to recover from the current situation, and that it will be over soon.

Mike, we’re so thankful that Janet’s surgery went well! We’re praying for a quick recovery and be up and about in no time!
Regarding those that want to keep us all housebound forever, we’re definitely in favor of them not receiving their pay checks as you so eloquently stated in your column and Saturday’s program! I’ll bet that they will change their minds about safely opening up our beautiful country! We’re starting to feel like we’re in a communist country instead of the United States of America! Very sad! As a senior, I never thought that I would see anything like this in my lifetime! God Bless you Mike and continue speaking out for us all! ??????????
