One of the most shameful examples of distilled partisan cruelty in America has to be the ongoing disrespectful treatment of Melania Trump.
If Melania were First Lady in a Democratic administration, she would be celebrated as the Jackie Kennedy of our time, a sophisticated and downright sensational asset to the President, particularly when he travels abroad to meet foreign leaders. She would have graced countless magazine covers. She would be hailed as an elegant, poised, worldly woman who speaks Slovenian, Serbian, English, French, and German and who knows firsthand what it was like be a young girl in Eastern Europe under Communism, as she was born in 1970, the height of the Cold War, in what was then Soviet Yugoslavia. (The State was officially atheist; as was often done, her father had her baptized secretly as a Catholic.) Think of it: from behind the Iron Curtain to First Lady of the United States. What a life story she has.

Yet by the media in her adopted country (who claim to embrace immigrants), she continues to be ruthlessly trashed. Popular culture pointedly rejects her. That’s why it’s all the more to her credit –- or should be –- that she remains dignified, gracious and professional.
This is only going to get worse as we wade into the political muck of 2020. Miranda Devine of the NEW YORK POST is as disgusted as I am and has a great new column about it. It was sparked by the release of a new book comparing Melania Trump and Michelle Obama that sounds like a good purchase if you really enjoy wasting money. MELANIA AND MICHELLE: FIRST LADIES IN A NEW ERA, by Tammy R. Vigil, purports to be a bipartisan (ha) assessment of the public images of the two women. Vigil, described by Devine as a Boston academic, rudely dismisses Melania, saying she “ranks among the least liked of all modern First Ladies, [and her] professional life prepared her to serve more as a visual adornment.”
This is a book I would throw across the room. There are way too many worthwhile books out there to be wasting time with this garbage. (Hey, I didn’t set out to write a book review, but I guess this brief paragraph will serve as one.)
Oh, and according to the author, it’s understandable why Melania is having such a hard time when she came after such “a popular and competent First Lady,” Michelle Obama. In other words, Michelle is a tough act to follow! And in its headline promoting the book, THE DAILY NEWS said, “Michelle was a polished attorney and huge asset to Barack; Melania, a top model, is nearly invisible.”
The media is certainly playing its role a Michelle-booster. Of course, you know I predicted last year that Michelle Obama would be the Democrat nominee for President this time around. I still stand by that prediction, not to lay claim to any psychic gift (there’s no such thing) but simply as a careful observer, and I offer it as a warning.
And this book came out as if on cue. Disenchantment is already growing for Kamala Harris; she’s fading as fast as Joe Biden’s mental acuity. Likewise Bernie. Likewise Buttigieg; even Democrats are coming to realize he can’t even run South Bend, Indiana. Leftists love Elizabeth Warren, who will likely become the frontrunner, but eventually enough Democrats will figure out that she can’t win against Trump. (Plus, she really DID game the system by misrepresenting her race.) All of them have aligned themselves with a list of lunatic-fringe proposals that would quickly bankrupt the country. To her benefit, Michelle will have been uninvolved with all that when she comes to the rescue.
Anyway, back to Melania and the comparison between her and Michelle. I could rant about how unfairly Melania has been treated, but Devine is just as disgusted as I am and has written a fine rant of her own. Why not let her take it from here?
