While the 4th of July week was a great week for America, it was a sad week for humor.  It was announced that after nearly 70 years, MAD magazine will no longer publish new issues (but Pete Buttigieg just found out who Alfred E. Neuman was!)  It’s hard to sell any magazine these days, but especially hard for MAD, for a number of reasons: the Internet has made people expect humor to be super-timely, not bi-monthly – and Twitter, Facebook and YouTube are filled with free topical one-liners and parodies.  There was also a lot of behind-the-scenes turmoil with DC Comics buying the magazine, firing the longtime staff and moving it from NYC to Los Angeles.

And here’s another reason nobody else is mentioning, from our writer Pat Reeder, who grew up on MAD and actually tried to read it more recently:

“I was disappointed to see that it had gone ‘woke,’ with a lot of the articles based on the same tired leftist premises as every other ‘humor’ outlet these days: Trump is a dumb dictator, global warming is rapidly destroying the planet, Republicans are racists, etc. etc.  The old MAD poked fun at all sacred cows and institutions, but the new MAD had gotten the ‘progressive’ religion and only attacked heretics. The left has taken over much of the culture and become the intolerant establishment, making them ripe for satire. MAD actually would have much funnier if it had dared to mock the new leftist establishment, too. But these days, they were dealing with a young demographic that seemingly has no sense of humor, plus the threat of violence from extremist thugs if you make fun of the 'wrong' thing.  Ask the staff of Charlie Hebdo about that, those who survived.”

MAD is too valuable and well-known (Pete Buttigieg aside) as a brand to stay away forever, so I suspect it will be revived before long.  To me, the far sadder news on the humor front was the announcement that “Mini-AOC,” the eight-year-old girl who did the hilarious parodies of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, will no longer do them and her parents have taken down all her channels.  Can you guess why?

That’s right: big, brave “social justice warriors” sent doxing and DEATH threats to an EIGHT-YEAR-OLD GIRL for committing the horrendous crime of poking fun at their favorite politician!

This infuriates me more than any other story in the news.  I hope that someone in the media asks AOC to comment on this and that she has the decency to condemn her own “defenders” in no uncertain terms.  I don’t particularly like it when people mock and insult me (and I guarantee you that none of them do it with even a fraction of the wit of that little girl), but I would never threaten them or demand they be silenced.

I also hope that federal authorities will use every tool at their disposal to hunt down, publicly identify, arrest and prosecute to the full extent of the law every last person who threatened that little girl and her family and frightened her into giving up her right to free speech and to exercise her God-given talent.  What a lesson to teach a child about the way America works!

Those people who threatened her are scum, and whether you are on the right, the left or anywhere between, anyone with any human decency at all should demand that they be scrubbed out of society.

The attacks and death threats against this little are absolutely terrifying. Where is the public outcry and the media attention that should be overwhelmingly in favor of arresting those who would do such a thing? So called “comedians” can hold up
bloody head look-alikes of the President of the United States and get a pass from the media and others while an eight year old girl receives death threats for a comedic parody of a “leftist darling”! Our nation has fallen off a precipice that I fear we will never be able to climb out of. Truly a sad, sad day for America.

How can we pressure the federal government to "hunt down, publicly identify, arrest and prosecute to the full extent of the law every last person who threatened that little girl and her family and frightened her into giving up her right to free speech and to exercise her God-given talent"? I HATE hearing how those who say ANYTHING against the far left are threatened with bodily harm, yet they are able to continue with no consequences at all. What can we citizens do to stop this???

Oh Mike that is so sad and distrubing. How have we let America come to this state. We have freedom of speech and you are allowed to say whatever you want to about me, but you dare me to say anything about you! This has gone to far and I am at a loss on how to stop it. I agree, I hope the ones who threatened that child and her family are punished to the fullest. She was so good at what she was protesting and never one time said the horrible things about AOC that they are saying about President Trump and we conservatives. Wake up America before it is too late. God bless America and President Trump.

America, has always been the land of the free and the home of the brave. The need for bravery is not just on the fields of battle, it is from your home, your workplace, your church, your phone, your computer and yes even your government job... So while I understand the little girl and her family and others abandoning the field of battle on the homefront, My Hope Is that others will step up even if it means putting their life on the line. The anarchists cannot be allowed to win just because we are faint of heart.

Bullying at it's best from people who like to throw "stones" but can't take the heat on push back. Social Justice warriors not "woke" just spineless agitators and disruptors.

May I suggest that you, Mike Huckabee, organize a campaign of AOC impersonators and put them on the Internet. Maybe have a contest to see who is the funniest. Grand prize , a Chick Fil A coupon
If you can organize the Chick Fil A promotion, you can do this for Mini AOC
    THANKS
    and
    Grace Grace

Who should we more mad at, the ones that threaten her or the authorities that let them get away with it?

So sad, about mini-AOC, but hardly surprising. Our country seems to have lost its sense of humor along with its sanity. This kind of attack threatens not only the individual --in this case a cute, innocent little girl, but our entire society. I completely agree with you about finding and prosecuting these cretins to the maximum legal extent possible(I might be tempted to say "and beyond", but I will take the Christian high road here and refrain...). Would mandatory force-feeding of 18 hours a day, non-stop videos of routines by Jonathan Winters, Robin Williams, Monty Python, Johnny Carson and George Carlan for the duration of their incarceration be too cruel of a punishment? More importantly, would it help?!

Isn't it a sad day when something like this happens in the Republic? Now that was funny, I don't care who you are! "Kids' Say The Darndest Things". And usually the most truthful.

I must admit it's been YEARS since I watched SNL after the crew that was actually funny moved on. I watched a lot of Johnny Carson, Leno, and evwn Letterman. Never watched a full show of any of the current late night "comedians." And, haven't heard of or seen on utube a lot of names bandied about as comedians. That being said, what is the difference of this little girl's stand-up comedy routine and all the other comedians that do parodies on politicians? (Usually bad parodies and only on conservatives.) Heck, she even uses good, clean language!! How many of the other comedians have been doxed and received death threats? I'm sure they would cry foul and be outraged if it happened to them.
