Maybe President Trump should have let Speaker Pelosi and her fellow Democrats take that junket to Brussels.  They could have learned about all the money the EU gave Turkey to stop the flow of refugees into Europe, and how much of it was spent on a 10-foot security wall hundreds of miles long, guarded by machine gun crews and armored patrol vehicles. Hey, Democrats want America to be more like Europe!

This story could spell bad news for the fast-rising “Jeff Flake for President” juggernaut.

I’m sure many of you are keeping a close eye on the weather this week.  But rest assured, no matter what you hear, the government shutdown is not making weather forecasts less reliable.  Also, unfortunately, the hot air generated by the parts of the government that are not shut down will not make the weather any warmer.

More Narrative Disruption: We have been assured that Americans are clamoring for more gun control laws.  In Virginia, 26 new bills were introduced in the legislature, which would have given Virginia some of the most restrictive and punitive gun laws in America.  Would have, except that all 26 have now been tabled or defeated.

It’s not bad enough that easily-triggered keyboard warriors tried to destroy the lives of innocent kids, but they also mistakenly tried to destroy the life of a kid who wasn’t even there but had the same last name.

The misidentified victim of the social media mob asked if people had nothing better to do with their Saturday than “scour the internet for drama & then dig up info on a family & rile up an army to attack them.”

Sadly, no.  No, they don’t. And that's yet another aspect of this whole sorry episode that deserves some serious reflection.

The Supreme Court overruled federal judges in California, Washington, D.C., and Washington State and temporarily lifted their stays on the Trump Administration’s ban on transgender individuals serving in the military.  Full details on the ban and the court case are at this link.

This isn’t a final ruling, just a temporary victory for Trump while the case is sent back to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco.  If they rule against Trump and lift the restrictions on transgender military members (and does anyone doubt they will?), then it can go to the Supreme Court, where I would expect Trump to prevail – both because the SCOTUS often overturns the far-left 9th Circuit Court and because the temporary stay was a 5-4 ruling.  The same four liberal Justices who said no to the the temporary enforcement of the trans ban will probably say no to making it permanent and be outvoted in an appeal.

By that time, it will have taken at least until the three-quarter point in Trump’s first term before the court system will have finally confirmed that the Commander-in-Chief runs the military, not federal judges.  Wonder if they’ll confirm the same about his duty to protect the borders before he begins serving his second term?

Feel-Good Story of the Day: A woman wanted her 96-year-old dad, who is both a widower and a heroic World War II veteran, to know that people remembered him on his birthday.  So she put out word on social media, asking people to send him a birthday card.  His birthday was two weeks ago, and the cards are still coming in…at last tally, closing in on 60,000 of them!

Ainsworth: UPDATE on the story that helped ruin MLK Day

Not that leftists in the media will ever apologize for what they did to the Covington High School boys --- except perhaps by issuing insincere statements crafted by lawyers to fend off the threat of lawsuits --- but the truth of what happened is gradually emerging.  If so-called “journalists” had just looked deeper into the story before running with the narrative of “white kids bad,” they wouldn’t have just pounded another nail into the coffin of their reputation.

Will journalism ever recover from this low point?  If I were entering college now, I doubt that I’d be pursuing a communications degree.  Come to think of it, I probably wouldn’t be entering college now at all.  It would be too much of a dumbing-down.  And brain cells are too valuable a possession to expose to such risk.  With rare exception, going to college today would be like moving to Flint, Michigan, and chugging gallons of tap water daily.

Anyway, here’s an update on the manufactured firestorm that helped ruin MLK Day and dishonor that great man.

Deplorably yours,

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez remains the gift that keeps on giving…to Republicans.  At a Martin Luther King Day forum for Millennials in New York, she drew cheers from the crowd for declaring that it’s immoral for society to allow billionaires to exist when there are poor people in Alabama, and that “the America that we’re living in today is dystopian, with people sleeping in their cars so they can work a second job without healthcare.”  Actually, the unemployment rate is at historically low levels, job creation is setting new records, wages are rising in real terms for the first time in years, a small fraction of workers hold more than one job, and there are smart ways to lower health care costs, but her party rejected them in favor of Obamacare.  The places where people have to sleep in their cars because they can't afford housing are largely liberal centers of income inequality such as Silicon Valley.

But her statement that really grabbed my attention was this:

“The world is gonna end in 12 years if we don’t address climate change.”

Talk about evoking a sense of nostalgia if not outright déjà vu.  Having occupied this planet for over twice as long as she has, I’ve heard similar predictions more times than I recall. That’s not in any way to downgrade the need to protect the environment and be good stewards of the Earth.  But radical environmentalists have made crying “Apocalypse” their go-to strategy for motivating the public for so long that nobody pays any attention to them anymore.  Some of them have even admitted that that’s exactly what they are doing and tried to justify it.

If you want to know why this type of alarmist prediction for the world ending only works on the very young and naïve, here’s a list of 12 environmental doomsday deadlines from the past 30 years, all of which came and went.  And this is only the tip of the rapidly melting iceberg.  They could have included many more and gone back even further.  My favorite was the prediction that by the mid-‘80s, the oceans would be so dead that tuna would be a rare delicacy selling for $80 a can.  I’m really glad I didn’t invest my life savings in tuna futures.

These Alarmist Predictions are all written by One & the Same guy - "U.N., Senior Official, President, Experts, Center Head, Leader of, Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, Pope!, World Leader, Liberal writer, Prince, NY Magazine Writer", and "Head of Panel".
In the real world men in such positions lie as a matter of course, nothing they say can be trusted. Myself, I came to this conclusion after several decades of dealing with failures of equipment made from specialized materials. It was always the metal’s fault, and some Guy in a Tie was trying to get the supplier to pay for his shop’s errors. I spoke to men with dirt under their nails to get at the truth.

Since the 1890’s actual, non-political scientists have been studying the effect of various pollutions on our atmosphere. Now in the Arctic, the permafrost is no longer “Perma”, glaciers are melting all over the world and one would have to be living in a very deep cave to not notice our climate doing unusual things, including more severe storms. I made my living for a half-century as an engineer applying science and I will NOT shut down my brain for any person or organization.

One advantage of Trump believing (?) that global warming is a hoax, is that if we leave it to Democrats they will devise the most expensive and counterproductive means to deal with the matter. With a bit of luck, perhaps the Federal Govt will stay out of the matter. It might then be handled locally, by the states and those with functioning brains. More or less local solutions, in my firm but unfounded opinion, have to be better than anything worked up by Congress, either party.

Well, I like your web posts anyway – and not just because you don’t wear a tie!

Just read this and could not believe the hypocrisy (sp?) of the republicans. I guess I should caveat that with IF IT'S TRUE...Senate funding bill that includes $5.7 billion for the wall extends 2018 prohibition barring actually using the funds to build the wall

    By Robert Romano

If all you read was headlines, you might get the impression that the omnibus spending bill offered by the Senate to end the partial government shutdown includes full $5.7 billion funding for the wall. But you’d be wrong.

“Senate GOP unveils omnibus bill to fund wall, reopen government,” reads one headline from Roll Call.

“Senate panel releases text of bill to reopen government, includes wall money,” declares Fox News.

“McConnell says vote expected Thursday on legislation to fund Trump’s border wall and reopen government,” CNN blares.

There’s just one problem. While the Senate legislation does in fact offer $5.7 billion for physical barriers, it leaves in place a 2018 prohibition on using those funds to build the prototype walls the President has been touting, including the steel barrier.

Included in the language under Title II of the omnibus bill is a reference to the prohibition: “Provided, That the conditions set forth in subsections (b) and (c) of section 230 of division F of the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2018 (Public Law 115–11 141) shall apply during fiscal year 2019…”

Meaning, you have to go back to the 2018 omnibus bill to see what the conditions were in Title II, Section 230(b), as noted by Conservative Partnership Institute Policy Director Rachel Bovard, which states: “The amounts designated in subsection (a)(2) through (a)(4) shall only be available for operationally effective designs deployed as of the date of the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2017, (Public Law 115–31), such as currently deployed steel bollard designs, that prioritize agent safety.”

This is not splitting hairs. That section limits the funds to those designs that were already deployed as of May 5, 2017, when the 2017 omnibus bill was passed. That takes all the President’s prototypes off the table, which were unveiled in Oct. 2017, including the new proposed steel barrier.

On Jan. 19, the President again stated his intention to build the steel barrier, “To physically secure our border, the plan includes $5.7 billion for a strategic deployment of physical barriers, or a wall. This is not a 2,000-mile concrete structure from sea to sea. These are steel barriers in high-priority locations.”

Fortunately, there is still time to address the inconsistency, with a vote not expected until Thursday. Just remove the conditions on the use of the funds and let the President build the wall he’s asking for.

Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning expressed dismay over the prohibition in a statement, calling it a cynical “bait and switch.”

“It seems incredible but the Senate funding bill does not allow the steel slat barrier envisioned by President Trump to be built using the $5.7 billion of funds that would be allocated for ‘the wall,’” Manning said, adding, “Instead it would allow fencing and repairs. It is time for Congress, including the Republicans to get serious about border security and it is disheartening that this type of border barrier bait and switch would be attempted at this stage of the shutdown.”

Manning concluded, “Americans for Limited Government urges that the proposed funding bill in the Senate be defeated unless amended to allow for a real barrier to be constructed. It is time to stop playing games with our nation’s security.”

Manning has a point. What’s the point of meeting the President’s request for funding but then prohibiting the wall he asking for? Why did we have this government shutdown for the wall just to settle for more fencing? What gives?

Three+1 "How Come Things" How come does the "Comments" often say "0" when there are definitely comments made? How come certain days are erased and when you click on that day it says error, however, it is listed in the listings elsewhere? How come the "moderator" blocks things that are NOT hateful, raciest, or inciting any violence...but maybe gut-wrenching sensitive? The plus (+) 1...wasn't Chuck Schumer "press sect." (Alberto), heavily involved in the multi-million$ FREY Island fraud case?

A recent poll says the majority of American's are in favor of AOC proposed 70% tax rate on the rich. The GOP and you better start taking this flake and her policies seriously. American voters are not as smart as you and Hannity keep saying they are. These kind of polls show the average voter is actually not smart at all when they come out in favor of this kind of crazy tax. Keep that attitude and the DNC will rule our country in 2020 and lead us all into socialism.

The only weather reports I pay attention to are the ones about the weather outside my door at the moment. Otherwise, their predictions for even several hours from now--and even more so a week from now have a 50/50% chance of being correct. In fact, when bad weather seems to be pending, I go to the local group where the Fire Chief keeps us updated on what's going on.

You'd think msm would get the idea that it would be a good idea to go back to the real days of reporting, where the aim was to keep the public informed about events, after having actually investigated the matters, instead of just wanting to get the scoop on every other network, thereby giving false reports. By the time the real story comes out, it's too late because their 24 hr news services have repeated the false story so often, no one pays attention when (IF) they give a correction. I'm sure there are people who keep their tvs tuned to some 24 hr news station, but I'm betting there are more of us who watch other things, and catch up on the news at 10 (or whenever.) Me, I wait to read here what the investigations have turned up for any particular event.

Perhaps if the legislators of Virginia (well, every state, and of the US) would actually talk to the people (not just their select few) they would know that the only people wanting more gun regulation are the anti-gun groups. I'm betting they have no idea how many in their particular states are actually proponents of gun control. The same goes for every issue. We have legislators who sit in the capital cities or in Washington thinking they know EVERYTHING and that they know what's best for the citizens, even if the citizens know it's not in their best interest. I know there are congressmen who DO check on the thoughts and ideas of their constituents--in Kansas, the Senators and Representative have town hall meetings all across the state whenever they are back "home." I'm sure there are probably others, but sadly, too few.

As for ocasio--she is of the generation that were "born" with cell phones in their hands. Most young people I know google all sorts of things throughout the day. You'd think she would google about whatever she is going to make statements about. She must not have attended history, government, civics classes--or maybe she did but didn't pay attention, so google should be her friend. I think she missed too many of her college economics classes, or the classes were on the same route as common core.

I read an article last night and now it's in the either of the internet about two professors in the 60's-70's about feeding the world population would be Impossible at the present rate of growth ( population at the time was 3.5-3.6 billion souls-. Well at 7.5 billion we still have the same hunger in the nations ( Africa) that WE thru the UN managed to get 50%( after handling fees and payoffs) for food to "Save the Starving Children" all we accomplished was quadrupling the number of Starving Children. Teaching Fishing inland isn't working either, maybe drilling for water and irrigation and fertilizer for crops MIGHT Work? Another avenue that needs to be shouted from the rooftops is in 1981, the year Ronald Reagan became #40 , 44% of the WORLD lived in EXTREME poverty ( i.e. less than $1.90 per person per day) . last year it was 9.6% , a decline of 78%. I'm sure the UN was totally responsible for this decline, and BTW my catfish farm in the Sonoma Desert is seeking funds. All contributions are totally not tax deductible. wish I had small print. BTW feel free to use as you see fit.

Nathan Phillips is a wicked, evil liar. He came close to ruining the lives of these young men. Any adult that would do that, all in the name of trying to take down the President, needs to be charged with hate speech. The press is just as bad. They wanted this to be true, so badly, they didn't check out the truth, even if it did hurt these young men. They didn't care. They saw those MAGA hats and it was like sharks seeing blood. No wonder the folks has no trust in the media any more. I believe the good Lord was watching out for them, and that is why there was so much video made. So it would show the boys innocents and the media and Phillips evil to everyone.

I was receiving daily in my inbox til about 3-4 weeks ago. All of a sudden it began showing up in my Junk mail. I contacted my carrier.Verizon and was told I had to talk to my internet provider. I contacted AT&T and worked with a technician for a couple hours and was told there must be some problem in the system and it would’ve referred. I still have to retrieve my message from Mike and mark it as not junk. It is then moved to my inbox where I read it. Is there something about how it is sent that causes it to hit Junk Mail. Has anyone else experienced this

I always enjoy receiving and reading your “Evening Edition” items, they are very insightful and informative. I have been a fan of yours for a long time. I also do not usually do commentary and do not participate in social media, limiting myself to email to a few close friends, so this response has been a long time in coming. I will work to limit my venting lest it end up the length of Ayn Rand’s “Atlas Shrugged”, which I fear is becoming prophetic.
I am concerned that displays of Conservative values are going to be driven from being allowed in public to being relegated to dark corners. The fiasco surrounding the attacks on the Covington Catholic High School young men following their attendance at the March for Life has seriously highlighted the downward spiral of values, faith and sense of personal responsibility. Prior to this event, I can not recall ever hearing of the Black Hebrew Israelites, which, from the video-clips I have seen, would seem to be a radical black supremacist organization akin to the Black Panthers. From watching the video clips, the Black Hebrew Israelites were pretty much the primary instigators of the chaos at the Lincoln Memorial, with Nathan Phillips (who by the way, did NOT serve in Vietnam) perhaps choosing to insert himself into it to try to elicit a response from the young man from Covington Catholic High School through a confrontation with him. Kudos to the young man for resisting. It is too bad that a mere quiet smile (NOT a smirk) is now cause for attacks.
It has apparently become wrong in our society display any support for the current President of the United States of America (red MAGA hats), the sanctity of life (March for Life) or belief in God, and has become totally appropriate to attack anyone who has the audacity to appear in public if they do support any of those principles. The only apparent visible thing which drew the Black Hebrew Israelites and Nathan Phillips to confront and attack the Covington Catholic High School young men would seem to be the red MAGA hats and other MAGA apparel which they were wearing.
By the way, do wholeheartedly agree with your idea (shared by actress Patricia Heaton) that those who so rabidly attacked these young men on the news and social media should have civil suits filed against them and made to pay six or seven figure compensations.
With these turns in our society, I fear for the direction we are heading, Conservatives will be silenced and driven into the dark corners for survival unless we “fight back”.

On climate change: someone should look at all of the dire predictions made over the last 150 years. There have been predictions for extreme cold and extreme heat as well as famine because the earth couldn't possibly support as many people as now inhabit it.
