If we could all climb into our time machines and visit any day in the months leading up to Robert Mueller’s appointment, we’d find the same thing on every news channel: absolutely everyone with a “D” after his or her name going on about the need for a special counsel to investigate “Russia Russia Russia,” with a laser-beam focus on finding ties with the Trump campaign. Not that there was any evidence of a crime, which is normally called for when a special counsel is appointed; Democrats proclaimed that the issue of “collusion” was so important, we HAD to have a special counsel! It was as if a memo had gone out: “Remember –- Special. Counsel. Talk it up! Consider the benefits --- even if there’s no evidence, we can tie Trump up for years and cast suspicion on his entire administration! We can snare him in a perjury trap (doesn’t matter if he’s deliberately inaccurate or not) and impeach him! You owe it to your party: keep the drumbeat going until a special counsel is appointed!”

I suppose there wasn’t an official memo, because if there had been one, WikiLeaks surely would have leaked it. But the effort was just as coordinated. Everyone used the same talking points and the same relentless hammering. And they finally got what they wanted. They succeeded beyond their wildest dreams: not only did they get a special counsel, but it’s about as packed with pro-Hillary, anti-Trump investigators as the upper echelon of the 2016 FBI.

Contrast that strategy with the way most Republican leaders have approached the appointment of a special counsel to investigate the politically-tainted FBI “investigation” of Hillary’s mishandling of classified email and the FISA application for spying on Trump associates, which were both infected by partisanship and conflicts of interest. We have real evidence of this, right in front of us, and these are crimes. But Republican leaders were extremely hesitant to create yet another special counsel to “investigate the investigators.”

Over time, though, through the persistence of Rep. Devin Nunes of the House Intelligence Committee and a few intrepid reporters and dogged, FOIA-waving lawyers, information gradually came to light that made it virtually impossible to do without one. The problems within the FBI simply cannot be investigated by the FBI, as South Carolina Sen. Lindsay Graham also has noted. An inspector general has been looking into the problems, and his sure-to-be-enlightening report will be out any week now. But Horowitz is extremely limited in what he can do.

He has no subpoena power. He can interview current FBI staff but not those who are no longer there, such as key player Andrew McCabe. A special counsel could subpoena McCabe and the other staffers who have left; plus those outside of government, such as Nellie Ohr and Glenn Simpson; plus any relevant documents; plus the heavy-hitters: Lynch, Holder, Hillary Clinton, even Obama if it came to that (now a private citizen; can I hear an amen). No inspector general has the power to see to the bottom of the swamp.

That’s why Trey Gowdy of South Carolina, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, finally changed his mind, along with Bob Goodlatte of Virginia, who chairs the House Judiciary Committee. In a letter to Attorney Gen. Jeff Sessions and Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein, they said, “The public interest requires the appointment of a Special Counsel” to investigate “certain decisions made and not made by the Department of Justice and FBI in 2016 and 2017” due to potential political conflicts of interest.”

“There is evidence of bias, trending toward animus, among those charged with serious cases,” the letter states. “There is evidence political opposition research was used in court filings. There is evidence this political opposition research was neither vetted before it was used nor fully revealed to the relevant tribunal.”

And now, just as Democrats “got the memo” on demanding a special counsel to investigate Trump with no evidence of a crime, they apparently got another one on how to react to the Republicans’ call for a special counsel to look into ACTUAL CRIMES. California Rep. Adam Schiff, ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, leads the choir, of course. Read his full quote in the story at Roll Call, along with a response from Maryland Rep. Elijah Cummings of the House Oversight Committee; these are quite amusing in their predictability and so very wrong.

Republicans are only now concluding that as long as we have the disruption of one special counsel, we may as well have two, if only to present a more nearly complete and balanced picture of what’s been going on deep in our own bureaucracy.

I’m afraid that Jeff Sessions will NOT allow a special counsel. Swamp drainage is a tough job. The swamp as we’re seeing is both rinos and dems who are in the Uniparty. The only person without baggage/guilt is the one they want to bring down.

"The Republicans finally agree to a special counsel" because enough time has elapsed that any incriminating evidence has been buried, likely along with any incriminating people. If the last eight years has taught us anything, it's that "Laws are for Little People" and the Democrats have nothing to fear from them. The Gawdys and Sessions will beat their chest in outraged "how dare you" indignity, showboating for the cameras, and do NOTHING effective to hold anyone accountable. Ask Louis Learner et. al. if you can pull her away from one of the parties where they laugh at the "lemmings." ALL of Washington is filthy corrupt, and Trump should have cleaned house down to the janitors the first day, when the American People would have backed him in bypassing the "keep our Democrat stooges in position forever" civil service rules. Obama never gave a fig about "rules" so why not? Washington is a septic tank and everyone there, R or D, is what floats in them.

Mike, Jeff Sessions ISN'T going to be allowed by HIS BOSS Rod Rosenstein to appoint a 2nd. Special Counsel. Rod doesn't want ALL the information pertaining to him to come out, and HE (Rod) is going to do everything in HIS power to keep it covered up.

    Dear Mike,
I am very pleased with ALL of your viewpoints and discussions -----anywhere that you print or have your thoughts printed by others to address the problems of the day in Washington D.C. or in the world!! I have been a "fan" of yours for many years now (I am now 79 y/o)!! I have always believed that you would or will be a fine President of the United States if this ever happens!
Yes, I have followed your life forever and will continue to do so!
Mike, the so called "Special Counsel" that was appointed was and is a farce for sure!! It should NEVER have been appointed without any CRIME described that our President Trump ever committed in the first place! NO CRIME; NO SPECIAL COUNSEL!!
I PERSONALLY DO NOT BELIEVE THAT OUR PRESIDENT TRUMP SHOULD NEVER TALK TO MR. MUELLER AT ANY TIME PERSONALLY! I JUST BELIEVE THAT MR. TRUMP WOULD BE IN GRAVE RISK IF HE WERE TO DO THIS.......PERIOD!!
I PERSONALLY BELIEVE THAT ALL SPECIAL COUNSELS "ARE OUT TO GET" THE ONE AT THE TOP OF THE RISK LADDER!! AT THIS TIME THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES (PRESIDENT TRUMP) WOULD BE A THE TOP OF THE LADDER, AND HE WILL BE IN GRAVE RISK FOR BEING CHARGED WITH SOME ACT OF NEGLIGENCE! THIS WILL BE A GRAVE RISK TO HIS ENTIRE PRESIDENCY!! THERE IS A REASON THAT MUELLER HAS PERSONALLY DECIDED TO APPOINT ALL HIS SUBORDINATE PEOPLE FROM THE DEMOCRAT PARTY AND FOR THAT REASON WILL BE SUCH A RISK FOR OUR PRESIDENT!!
I sincerely hope that you agree with this reasoning and will allow the entire world to know this!!
Our president has been an outstanding one, and we do not want to loos e him!.......Robert W. Brunner, M.D.

It's about time. The dems loaded the dice with the "special counsel" looking into the possible collusion with the Russians and they came up with nothing. Seems to me that they need to pay the cost of this fiasco out of their own pockets. In my opinion, Mueller has overstepped the bounds of his investigation many times over and in the cases of this over reach, he should be personally held accountable for the costs associated with such. Had the Republicans pulled this shit on the Obama Administration when he was elected the dems would have turned our streets to chaos.
We won, they need to shut up and accept it. This is a task that seems to be too daunting to a liberal but we need to stand tough for our principals. When they take their gloves off, we should do the same and make them wish they were smart enough to be on our side.

The US needs to clean this up and show the world that the strongest democracy is capable of routing its corruption even at the very top. It is critical for the US to show leadership in the strength of the truth. The world is watching. European administrations are thousands of years old and are riddled with corruption. So is the UN , not forgetting countries like China who are happy staking their claim on Hong Kong, Taiwan, South China Sea and change the constitution to elect a leader for life. Whilst Putin circumvent with impunity the Russian constitution with a round Robin of PM. The strength of the US is its capacity for renewal, it's search for transparency and the enforcement of equality before the Law of the land. If the US fail the corruption in the world will remain entrenched and the US may loose what it remains of its integrity. Much has been lost under Obama.

I think all of this is long overdue on the part of the Republican Party and I applaud the gumption of Trey Gowdy Devin Nunes and others who are supporting the effort to get a special counsel to investigate questionable if not illegal activity on the part of the democratic party during the campaign for the presidency. We do have laws we do have rules and to be sure that everything is fair they should be enforced and those who fail to abide by those laws should be held accountable in one fashion or another based on the rule of law.

The Department of Justice website has a place for you to write a personal letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions. It is a drop down menu under the “Leave a Comment” section. You can drop down the menu to the Attorney General, near the bottom. I strongly urge EVERYONE to write to the Attorney General and demand a Second Special Counsel. Tell him that if the crimes that took place under the Obama administration are not prosecuted and PUNISHED, then they will happen again in the FUTURE, because there will be NO FEAR of retribution under the law, long after Jeff Sessions is GONE. Please tell Sessions to stop protecting the DOJ and FBI from political embarrassment. He needs to do the right thing and appoint a Second Special Counsel to show there is equal justice under the law and to prevent these crimes from taking place in the future. Millions of people can act and make your voices heard! Your letters will be read. Thank you!

  • Leslie Key

    03/12/2018 02:13 PM

Attorney General Jeff Sessions will not appointment a Second Special Counsel because he wants to protect the DOJ and FBI. He is cautious, political and spineless. Current Inspector General David Horowitz has NO PROSECUTORY power and cannot subpoena witnesses who have already left the FBI and DOJ, like McCabe, Comey and Lynch. No wonder Trump is seething with frustration about Sessions’ inaction!! Sessions tells the American people that he is looking into FISA Court abuses and they won’t happen under his watch. So what? What is to prevent these same kind of abuses when another Democratic President and Attorney General get in power in the future? They will have No FEAR of any legal consequences! Shame on Jeff Sessions for caring more about protecting the DOJ and FBI from embarrassment than about equal justice under the law! The Obama administration was the most corrupt in US history, and it can ALL happen again in the future because Jeff Sessions is making sure there are NO legal consequences for criminal activities! We need a Second Special Counsel! Shame on spineless Jeff Sessions!

Hopefully this will come to pass. Sadly, when considering the establishment wing of BOTH parties, they are just different sides of the same coin. If the swamp isn't drained under the Trump administration, it never will be! The backing of NWO types (think Soros), reaches deeply into both parties. As a young person, back in '59, I remember seeing Khrushchev saying that they would be victorious over us by our own hand. We are perilously close to that point! With new calls for more gun control ( people control) coming from BOTH sides, our Liberty in in jeopardy as never before. Nothing that has been suggested would do more than inconvenience the criminal, but would greatly impair the rights of the law abiding citizens. The 2nd Amendment is ALL about the ability to reign in an out of control government. This government needs some SERIOUS reining in!

Pastor, (Once a pastor, always a pastor). Just a question but why, if Hillary is as guilty as everyone (including me) thinks, why has there not been any action against her since the elections? Trump has been humiliated for over a year and yes, some of it is deserved, but she and her organization are walking away scott free from even accusations of quieting down (murdering) those who opposed her. I can't believe that the party with all the power is just gonna overlook this. This could make or break the U. S. of A.! I truly believe that we are headed down a very slippery slope with just about everything going on today and no one seems to care about anything except stabbing our POTUS in the back, the front, top and anywhere else they might get a knife into! It does appear, the democrats and their drum beaters are beginning to learn what Teflon cooking pans and their users have already learned. Teflon peals or scratches off and once slick surfaces begin to become crusted with scab like residue. They have been putting the Lord their God to the test way too long. I think we are on the verge of getting to see the sores under the scabs. An interesting thought--Can one special counsel look into the workings of another special counsel?

I am not going to hold my breath The rinos have no BALLS!!! odumbo and the jackasses ran rough shod over this country for 8 years and the rinos did NOTHING!!! NOW we have an AMERICAN President and the rinos oppose him every step of the way. There are so many rinos caught up in the corruption with the jackasses that they are never going to allow the truth to come out because it would only be "cutting their own throats" Our entire federal "government", the federal bureau of incompetence and the political system is as corrupt as a 3rd world country. They keep stuffing their pockets with corrupt cash and keep passing laws that WE have to follow but they can ignore to get that almighty POWER over us and they are scared stiff that President Trump will take that away. AND will do ANYTHING stop him. I don't doubt for one second that the jackasses, rinos, federal bureau of incompetence and any other federal agency that is afraid of our President Trump, has a plan for assassination if they can't get him impeached!! Dear Governor,
While I am appalled at the President’s boorish behavior at times, but I look at what he is actually doing, not his rhetoric. He is doing, or trying to do, some very good things. I suspect middle class working families are quite please with their “crumbs”, for example. No matter what he does, the liberals will find something wrong with it. He could buy into their whole agenda and they still would find negatives. Their whole mission is to disrupt the administration. They have little interest in the good of the country. They are still in denial about their loss.

Can any substantial change for the better really be expected without the establishment of at least 2 more political parties? Why 2? Because if there was only 1, the Democrats and the RINOS would team up against the common "enemy" a'la the Tea Party. The Democratic party and the RINOS collaborate to perpetuate their hold on power to the detriment of the American people, so how realistic is it to think that they would work against their own interests by working for the good of the nation?
