Tuesday marks the start, with jury selection, of one of Paul Manafort’s two trials –- this one in the U.S. District Court of Eastern Virginia, the other in Washington DC.  The jury pool will be very different for these two trials, and the judges may be, too.  In pre-trial hearings in Virginia, Judge T. S. Ellis III made it clear he knows why special counsel Robert Mueller is pursuing Manafort so relentlessly; he’s seen prosecutors apply pressure to get witnesses to “sing,” or even “compose.”  We all know Mueller is after bigger fish; namely, the Orange Trumpy, known for its brazen behavior and thick skin.

Manafort surely has endured much pressure.  He and his wife were awakened, pre-dawn, by armed officials for a search of their home.  While awaiting trial on charges totally unrelated to the Trump campaign, he’s been treated like a convicted criminal, held in solitary for 23 hours of every day.  That’s when suspects typically start “composing.”

You know, Manafort might be guilty of these years-old charges.  We don’t know what evidence will be brought against him; reportedly, over 35 people are on the witness list, five of whom have received immunity.   In the Virginia trial, he’s charged with laundering over $30 million in Ukrainian political consulting fees and hiding it from the IRS.  There will likely be testimony about his lavish lifestyle –- his Mercedes, pricey property, finely tailored suits, and high-end furnishings and art.  Maybe he’s a smart businessman who profited from legal investments.  If that’s true, let’s hope his nightmare –- which, it must be said, started because he dared to help elect Donald Trump  –- ends soon.

But if he’s guilty, questions arise:  Did Trump know of Manafort’s shady finances when he hired him for his campaign?  If so, why didn’t he anticipate the political fallout?  He trusted Michael Cohen, too, to handle very personal matters before Cohen showed how utterly untrustworthy he is.  What does this say about Trump’s ability to judge character?  These will be issues for Trump to address if Manafort is convicted.,-not-collusion?utm_medium=AP_Politics&utm_source=Twitter&utm_campaign=SocialFlow

Commentary continues below advertisement

But I’ll give Manafort one thing:  he apparently is loyal, unlike Michael Cohen, who, when subjected to the Mueller search-and-destroy treatment, opted to “flip” and cooperate with the special counsel, even if it meant disclosing that he had secretly taped his own client.  That’s about as disgraceful as it gets, even for an attorney known as a “fixer.”  He could (and should) be disbarred for that, but at this point it hardly matters to his career in law; who in the world is going to trust him with anything now that we know he’s done that?  Likewise, who can believe him when he claims, without evidence, that Donald Trump, Jr., told his father in advance of that meeting with some –- gasp! –- Russians in Trump Tower?  Giuliani refuted this assertion thoroughly in an interview with Chris Wallace on FOX News Sunday.

Maybe Cohen is looking at a second career in broadcasting, with (appropriately) CNN or perhaps MSNBC.  It’s easy for leakers and liars to get jobs there if they’re sufficiently anti-Trump.

Trump’s current attorney, former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, said over the weekend that two retired FBI agents examined the recording leaked to CNN of Cohen’s conversation with Trump about paying a Playboy model and concluded that someone had “played” with it.  They say it’s “a tape of a tape.”  Giuliani needs to be able to analyze the original recording but says chances of that are “slim.”

Now, I assume that in 2016, they’re not talking literally about a piece of magnetic tape like we used to use when I started in radio.  (I recall one episode of “Columbo” in which the murderer’s secretary would press “play” on a reel-to-reel tape machine in her desk drawer to record all his phone calls.  Her boss’s crafty editing of that tape was used to make it sound as if he were talking on the phone when he was really out murdering.  But I digress.)  I assume this was some sort of voice-activated digital recording.  Gosh, digital recordings are a cinch to manipulate, but experts can still tell.  That includes the way this “tape” abruptly cuts off.

Speaking of “Columbo,” I wish we had Lt. Columbo right now, to walk into the special counsel’s office and say, “You know, there’s something about this that bothers me...”

    Mr. Huckabee,
I've heard you (not simply listened) and discussed your strengths and weaknesses with others and, I nearly voted for you.
However, can we please let the leftist haters of our President come up with their own questions(?) how about we focus our attention on the real enemies of our great nation who have committed high crimes and misdemeanors and overwhelming evidence exists re same: culprits of these crimes include, but are in no way whatsoever limited to Comey, Mueller, Brennan, Abeden, HRC, WJC... Mr. Huckabee, I like you and with all due respect, your comments re Manafort vis-a-vis President Trump sort of sounds as though you have your sights set on 2020 but right now is the time to circle our wagons and not let the left destroy a presidency and our Republic certainly does not need calling our President's judgement into question. May God continue his blessings upon our United States of America, you, your family.

I believe the reason Paul Manafort IS in solitary confinement, was on the request of his attorneys, because there is a real and ominous danger of him being targeted in prison, either by a prisoner who is a Trump-hater and looking for "street cred", or by someone hired on the inside to harm him because of his refusal to come up with a credible attack against Trump, to nail him for something criminal or impeachable, as Mueller's team would like him to do.

All the reports I have read indicate that he has a much better situation in "solitary" than most inmates put there for disciplinary or safety reasons (even though it's got to be psychologically harmful on many levels) . He has access to more resources and communication and somewhat nicer accommodations than usual.

But Manafort's imprisonment itself, without benefit of a trial, is outside the norm for most white-collar accused criminals, since the "witness tampering" alleged was not anywhere near a violent threat, and he is not an escape risk. Manafort NEEDS to be freed immediately in order to enable him to prepare for trial.
WE need to be praying for his legal team's attempt to have him freed, as well as for his psychological, mental and spiritual well-being while going through this horrendous ordeal.

The fact that long time supporter and friend of Bill and Hillary Clinton, Lanny Davis, decided to ride in on his white horse to defend Michael Cohen, a Republican, begs to ask the question Why??? and who is paying for his defense???

Why should Trump have to explain Manafort or Cohen improper conduct when no one else knew enough to say so if it is true. Who in DC or Hollywood for years does not have bad things in their closets? This just plays into the Left Media gotcha tactics while ignoring their motes. Why are we tolerating the media trying to change the narrative to the "witch hunt" now means claiming that Russia was not a bad actor, when it has always been that the media and Mueller trying nail Trump is/was the witch hunt? Why are we tolerating Mueller not investigating Hillary for Russian collusion in 2016 election and accepting the never-ending-story hunt destroying people trying to find something they have already said many times is not there--Trump collusion or campaign crimes?
This tolerance is beyond idiotic, un-American, and illegal. Trump may want to wait until after November to blow the lid off, but we Deplorables will not trust anyone who lets the real criminals escape justice much longer while the Left continues to openly persecute Christians and Conservatives daily.

Why would Trump be expected to know about anything Manafort did illegally? If it has taken countless man hours by a whole investigative team along with the FBI and CIA to get dirt on Manafort--why would Trump know about it, he didn't have those resources--I'm sure Manafort wasn't bragging to him about it! Ridiculous witch hunt by the ethically and mentally challenged!

Gov. I cannot understand why this man is being brought to trial for doing business with Russians ? when was this a crime? He even was taken to prison per no trial. What is going on in this country today. Scary as heck. If I had been him I would have found a way to get a private plane and taken off to a country that I might be free maybe even Russia Ha! This now is so beyond boring that the Russians got into our election. No way would I have ever voted for Hillary so it did not take any Russian into her info to take away my vote. Sad now for so many who tried to help Pres Trump win and now they are on the chopping block WHY? Who was able to do this and get all of these warrants and this investigation to prove what. That you did business with the Russians. What was Hillary and her husband doing with them for years and then she paid for this FBI and others to start an investigation. Something is wrong here and not good the things now ongoing here per many men being attacked for so called sexual and now after 20 yr prove what? Not going to be any Russians who take us down it is ourselves and our stupid SWAMP Congress. Thank you Gov for trying to keep things real. I feel so bad for Pres Trumps family and if I was his wife Melania I would say time to go home dear this is not worth what it is doing to his family and friends they will not give up that far left group and working it daily and scary on that our Media is part of this also. WHY? Thank Pres Trump for all he is trying to do but he is not getting the backing he needs to accomplish a lot so why try . Go and take care of his business that they are out to destroy next no doubt.

I must be hopelessly naive. I had always thought that what went on between attorneys and their clients was protected, with the exception of an attorney who allows his client to testify when he knows he is not being truthful, thus suborning perjury. I guess that is put the window now. What next, lplsntling bugs in the pastor’s office or the confessional.

As to the differences between how Presidents Trump and Obama are, and were, treated. Just another example of rank hypocrisy. About the Russians. I don’t get it. HRC had more dealings with the Russians, all of the Presidents have met and talked
with Putin. Would the Trump haters prefer war because of a misunderstanding occurring? Maybe Kim will not meet all his obligations, who knows, but would the Trump haters prefer war? Negotiations are very delicate and anyone with any intelligence at all knows the the leaders that Trump is dealing with must save face with their countrymen. The President doesn’t let the do that if he trashed them to their face in public. It is so hard for me to believe that the Trump haters really would prefer VP Pence, a true doctronaire conservative. Well, I suppose they would go after him, too. Some actually believe HR.c would become President. That is laughable.

Thing is, Mike, if --IF---we had an honest media, wouldn't even be hearing much about all this nonsense-except to report that the 'witch hunt' is TRULY witch hunt.
Enjoyed seeing Gowdy and Scott on your program last night.
    Enjoy show every week.
Wonder how many viewers might be watching each week.
God bless and keep up good work.

Thanks Mike for your fair reporting, great commentary, entertaining TV show and loyalty to President Trump. Your newsletters are always clear, concise and expose the ulterior and unethical motives affecting today's political environment. Our county needs more leaders like you who advocate Christian values. We don't have many leaders like you and Mike Pence. Please do not ever retire!

The persecution by the left of anyone affiliated with Trump will not stop. I would love to know what we, as citizens, can do about it. I suppose show up at the polls en masse, and affect change that way. And of course, most importantly, pray. 8 years of Obama produced Trump; just imagine what could be accomplished if the conservative base coalesced into one body with a single-mindedness to save our country.

Only God knows what will happen to America, but It's all in his big, big plan! I often remember what Nakita Krucheve said many years ago that America would fall without a shot being fired! In my opinion, America's greatest threat is not Putin or Russia, but those anti-patriots in our Government who are bent on making this a Godless, Socialist society. I weep to think how it may be for those yet to live in this country! May God have mercy on us!

You can bet that the deck is stacked against Manafort simply because he was associated with Trump. He was arrested by using KGB torture tactics of surprising someone by breaking into their home, taking them under force and locked up in solitary confinement! He had done nothing that would have gotten him in any trouble until he did the unforgivable, i.e., support Trump. Many democrats, given this scrutiny would not pass the test! What happened to Manafort to get him to "spill the beans" is no less torture than a few minutes of waterboarding that they so detest as inhumane torture.

If Mule-er must be stopped! He is public enemy number one and unfortunately has the support of all leftists aka democrats and sadly many who call themselves republicans. Trump needs to bring in a heavy equipment crane and demolish the dam that holds the swamp, starting with Sessions and those in the so-called justice dept. and moving straight through the top of CIA, FBI and bureaucrats that have been in their jobs over 10 years. An old-fashioned government house-cleaning must be done. Short of that I believe this nation is hosed!

I have been praying for Manafort. His treatment is nothing less than criminal. This sounds like China, Russia, or some mid eastern country, not America. "God, please bring justice back to our broken Nation!"

Love your reference to Columbo. I can imagine that scene too. Thank you for the voice of reason. If only we had journalists again but alas we don't. I want the facts, just the facts. (A reference back to Jack Webb.) I appreciate your commentaries which are based on the facts. As a man of God and who has integrity, I know I can trust your reporting of facts. Sadly others are pure fiction. Also, please tell Sarah how much we appreciate her work. She is so quick on her feet and is a great example to young professional women. God bless the Huckabee clan!

Gov Huckabee, what do we do about this?????!!!! This is not justice, it's horriffic and wrong. What can Americans do? That someone who has not done anything, has been in jail being treated as not only common criminal, but someone who is a very dangerous criminal, when just about anyone else even if they have done something would be out on bail! How has this all been allowed in our justice system?! Seems like if President Trump would just take action and fired Sessions and Rosenstein, this would all just END!!!!! That this man, has not turned on his President is very telling about who and what he is. I give him so much credit, they have ruined him all on a witch hunt against our duly elected President!!!!!! PLEASE, WHAT CAN WE DO?

This is certainly a witch hunt from the Deep State but even when it fails miserably, Mueller and his Democrat Dogs will have made MILLIONS ripping off we the people. This rip off is how DC Deep State has always worked but I pray Trump brings an end to this corruption!

And by the way, Trump's judgment and instincts are just fine and compared to many past presidents and their campaign help, Trump looks just fine there too!

What I have learned from all of this
Is that everything our president is being blamed for is what the democrats actually did. I have also learned that there is a very powerful source working hard to change our country to becoming socialist. There are plenty of countries in this world that are already socialist. Move over there and fight for power over there. Why do people leave those countries to come here and then try to change us? Is there anyone in congress that puts Americans before money anymore?
