Tragic news: Otto Warmbier, the 22-year-old American student held for 17 months in a North Korean prison, much of that time in a coma, died Monday, just days after finally being brought home to his family. Some are describing his death as murder by the North Korean regime, and I wouldn’t dispute that. The claim that his coma was brought on by botulism seems ridiculous on the face of it, and there is no excuse for continuing to hold him in secrecy and without medical care for so long.
My heart and prayers go out to his family. I can only imagine, if it were my son, how I would feel and how I would try to move Heaven and Earth to get him of that wretched nation. This is further proof, if any were needed, that North Korea is a disaster of a nation, with a leadership lacking in even the most basic morals or human decency. But it’s not just Otto Warmbier who was victimized; there have been too many tortured political prisoners to name, and if you count the North Korean citizens who have been arrested, tortured and starved, then it runs into the millions.
This death of an American citizen in their custody should serve as a last straw warning to China, which has tried to act as a buffer by claiming that they will bring Kim Jong Un into line to prevent the US from taking direct action. Well, it's time for China to do whatever they have to do to bring that rogue regime to heel for good. And they can’t or won’t, then stand aside.
